Really enjoyed watching a lot of this show on YouTube. It's funny how Ritchie can get to people in a live context. There's no argument really that this band is not as tight as it should be, but there is still a lot of magic. I've a friend on Facebook, as you do, who I haven't spoken to for 20 years or so, from school days. I used to try to woo her by giving her music including some Blackmore's night. Anyway, Thursday morning she has a very enthusiastic post about the Birmingham gig. The picture showed she had some naff seat in the corner at the back. I loved the first half of his solo in Glasgow, it was inventive, and seemed improvised but still cleverly put together (even improvised music has to have a structure and build to a proper climax, and this did). But it sounded like it reached a natural climax and should have finished half way into it. The second half then didn't seem to fit at all, and seemed to be a bit too random, like he couldn't figure out a structure for the next four minutes. Of course I don't know the actual situation, but as a listener he sounded like he was expecting to play four minutes or so and struggling to fill the rest of the time when Ritchie didn't come back on. nondisclosed_email@example.com (David Meadows)Sat, 01 Jul 2017 07:40:09 +0000 Re: Rainbow - Birmingham Genting Arena - June 28th 2017https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p510953,from=rss#post510953https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p510953,from=rss#post510953quote:Big J wrote: Mistreated - different view. All his solos have been completely different. I know there are people who think they are boring but I have enjoyed them. He is also much more than just a metal player- he has done jazz and fusion albums and one album of improvised piano music. IMO he is the best keyboard player in the world and he is also a long time fan so I doubt Ritchie could have found a better player for this project. The difference between him and Jon is that Jon spent many years playing with Ritchie and they developed their styles together. Jon would challenge Ritchie and they would compete on stage. Ritchie doesn't play that way anymore so there are other things that are required from the players he has in the current lineup. Also there have been a very limited amount of rehearsals and you can't expect to get a tight unit if you have hardly played together. Ritchie apparently wants it that way. nondisclosed_email@example.com (niji)Fri, 30 Jun 2017 20:20:13 +0000 Re: Rainbow - Birmingham Genting Arena - June 28th 2017https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p510950,from=rss#post510950https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p510950,from=rss#post510950Mistreated - different view. Jon knew like no-one else when to step up and cover for Ritchie, when to drag him back into the show, when to compensate the missing rhythm parts, when to push him, when to just let him fly, etc - it's part musicianship, part being a psychologist and a friend. And Ritchie has never again found anyone like Jon, who incidentally also had a very similar musical background and could understand what he was trying to do. This explains, to me, both the difficulties Jens is having (power metal being a very worked-out style of music, with little space for improvisation), and the tribute to Jon, that I think Ritchie felt very strongly about.nondisclosed_email@example.com (mtb7)Fri, 30 Jun 2017 15:49:27 +0000 Re: Rainbow - Birmingham Genting Arena - June 28th 2017https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p510944,from=rss#post510944https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p510944,from=rss#post510944Carry On Jon - I saw this last night, absolutely terrific! When the band last year was first announced it was Jens' name that really got my interest. He was a fabulous foil for Yngwie in the early Rising Force days, able to match the fast complex runs with ease. I've seen footage of a young Jens playing Hammond and he was all over it and was really exciting to watch. But for some reason he seems very diffident in Rainbow and it shows both in his stage persona and his playing. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Big J)Fri, 30 Jun 2017 12:59:09 +0000 Re: Rainbow - Birmingham Genting Arena - June 28th 2017https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p510942,from=rss#post510942https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p510942,from=rss#post510942I was going to post a long review but decided instead to just give my general thoughts about the show. I've seen Whitesnake twice, Sabbath with Gillan in 83, Purple 7 times (all with Steve Morse), and Jon Lord once in 2009. Was this the best gig I've ever seen? No. Was it the best Purple family gig I've ever seen? A close call between this and Jon's Dublin gig in 2009. 3 standout moments for me: – That beautiful solo in Mistreated – The slide solo on Catch The Rainbow – Carry On Jon Moments I wasn't too pushed about: – Keyboard solo – Perfect Strangers/LLR&R/Black Night/Smoke On The Water. I'm bored hearing these songs. Things I noticed: – Ritchie was having FUN!!! Banter between him and Ronnie which was audible over the mic. When RR was ending Soldier of Fortune he looked back at Ritchie who tapped his wrist in a jokey 'get on with it' message. – Falling behind in Child In Time and then directing Bob to play a bass solo, which Bob did before Ritchie decided to play one himself. – I Surrender was a lot better than I thought it would be. – The drum solo was actually entertaining and showed that there is a fun factor with these guys. I think DK and RR were probably fooling around with this during rehearsals so decided to have some fun on stage. – No forced encore. The band played straight through and the gig was all the better for it. – Jens looked uncomfortable. I don't know if it's the discipline he has to play by in his other projects, but he seems to be taken by surprise when Ritchie does something spontaneous and still isn't used to it. Bob and David seem more able to go with it and they are far better in this band than some people give them credit for. – Probably the first time in 30 years that Ritchie hasn't changed the line up between tours So, a cracking evening in my opinion. No one expected Carry On Jon. I think we were all waiting for TOTK into SOTW as per Glasgow. The whole air of unpredictability at Ritchie gigs is what makes it special for me. You don't know what you're gonna get and that adds to the enjoyment (provided RB is in a good mood). It's also the reason why I find DP of recent years to be a bit MEH. But that's a whole other argument. And either he likes Birmingham or just pulls out the stops for the final show of the tours. I think we got the best of the 3 again by a long chalk. I can also answer the questions about some of the images on the screen. There's a site I use called Videoblocks which offers cheap stock video footage. Some of the images that were playing behind the band are ones I have seen on that site. I've downloaded some of the myself for possible use. I don't expect everybody to agree with me of course, as it's purely a personal thing, but I'm sorry that you had a disappointing night and I wish you could have been happier with the gig. I enjoyed it and i'm glad i went but i'm not blind to the deficiencies on the night and how much better it could have been with a decent backing band. I acknowledge that RB isn't going to be as fluid or practiced as he once was but his playing in I Surrender, Mistreated, Stargazer & Catch the Rainbow was sublime. The tracks with less inherent gravitas -Since You've Been Gone, All Night Long, Black Night, Long Live Rock And Roll- were all greeted with enthusiasm but petered out long before the conclusion of the track. Child In Time started ok but Ritchie checked out of the solo which is fine- i can live with that given that he has rarely played a "complete" gig for years. If he had a decent band behind these shortcoming wouldn't matter so much but Lazy for example was a complete mess because the band aren't good enough to follow him when he goes of the cuff-can you even begin to imagine Purple making such a horliks of that if he'd started the riff without telling anyone? Burn started great but the keyboard solo is so iconic it must be a nightmare to try but it doesn't get over the fact that it was awful. The drumming-which sounds pathetic on the live CDs from last year was ok (despite some totally un-necessary fills in the quiet bit of Mistreated) but the lowest marks must go for the bass playing. In 35 years of gig going i don't believe i've heard worse.   nondisclosed_email@example.com (Perfectly Strange)Fri, 30 Jun 2017 12:46:49 +0000 Re: Rainbow - Birmingham Genting Arena - June 28th 2017https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p510934,from=rss#post510934https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p510934,from=rss#post510934There was an area curtained off at the back, and I don't know how big that area was.
