Donnington 1983 - not on the Video but from the Video (Cozy Powell solo)

Bumped into this whilst getting a fix of Sir David of Coverdale's second Donnington adventure. Never seen it before but as I am not the most devoted hunter of Youtube then you may have seen it already. From the same tapes as the show it would appear.

Shame this performance hasn’t been officially re-released in its entirety to show a fine show from this era of the band. Sure there is a reason (be it due to contractual matters/ it being lost/ DC ignoring pre Sykes music etc)

Cozy wasn't everyone’s WS 'cup of tea' but I love watching the Donnington gig; would have been great to be there but it was my 8th Bday! And Slide it In with him and Mel is probably my favourite WS studio performance. Still sounds great.

I've seen it already, but thanks. I watch Donington 1983 very, very often. What a band that was! I keep waiting for the complete video with solos and the magnificent encores. On that short late summer European tour they were playing Cozy's nice intrumental Rattler from his album Octopus (album featuring Lord, Galley and Hodhginson)instead of his solo. Shame they didn't do it on Donington.

My first ever MOR Donny visit. Remember reading a bit in the sun from cov urging everyone to bring their flying jackets! I was simply blown away by the 1812 and the helicopters. If memory serves zz top flew their eliminator car over as well and it was the first time I ever saw Ronnie James Dio.

Re:

I was at the gig as well. It was the first time I had ever been to a huge festival type gig so it was pretty overwhelming for me. I think this was Dio's first live show (correct me if I'm wrong) and they blew me away- absolutely fantastic. ZZ Top were also great live but the rest of the line up (Meat Loaf, Twisted Sister and Diamond Head I think) were not my cup of tea.

My recollection of WS was that they were brilliant, but sadly I don't think the video of the show did their performance justice. The sound mix was really horrible, really dry- in fact it sounded like it hadn't actually been mixed properly at all. And of course they inexplicably cut both Cozy's solo and the encores from the video- so it's really good to see this video of the drum solo turn up on You Tube!

I saw this WS line up live twice and I don't think they had the same vibe or chemistry as the line up with Murray, Marsden and Paice- but they were still very good. I'd really love it if this gig was remixed/remastered and officially re-released one day.

I think at a young age I was spoilt by this drum solo in regards being spectacular and found most drum solos since as being a chance of a loo visit!
For many years i talked about it and still do. So glad this clip emerged.
Still baffles me why it was not included on the video.

Re:

Many years ago somebody mentioned the various cuts were to keep the video below 1 hour in length; back in the day when video tape was expensive! Maybe, maybe not the reason.

Anyone got an insight into why it hasn't be re-released? Contractual or just DC ignoring anything pre Sykes?

I think it's for a contractual reason mainly. David once said he's sure the complete video exists and will see the light of the day. Maybe if he's interested enough it will happen no matter the legal obstacles. If it exists.

And see this:
Uj0yoB2QLA" rbtag2="rb-qdecode-href-en" rbcvt="1">https://www.youtube.com/watch?vemoticonUj0yoB2QLA

Cozy's solo from the UK 1984 tour (Leeds). At the end, the complete band (exept, I think, David) comes out, wich is the only of MKVI live video shot existing, at least that I know. Strange if somone from the audience recorded the drum solo only.

Way back in 1983 they also did Utrecht(The Old Vredenburg).
Lord wanted to play something subtle from his his then current solo album, I think it was Burntwoord, and some people put us to shame shouting loudly through Lords efforts.
The wankers shouted they wanted rock and roll et all that.
Ow, the emberassment I felt.

He suggested them to keep calm by making the shhhhhhhhhhh gesture but he gave up and went straight into a rehearsal for Space Trucking.
