The Purple/Gillan statements about Hall of Fame appearance

Deep Purple
http://www.deep-purple.com/2016/02/with-respect-to-all/

February 19, 2016

We were faced with a hard decision when we heard about the Hall of Fame inductions. It was a surprise to us that Steve Morse and Don Airey did not qualify as inductees.

Ian G. Ian P. and Roger G. – decided upon the offer of a compromise which has been agreed with the HoF and enables us to turn up on the night.

DP Inductees will accept the awards and then the living breathing Deep Purple will perform.

It should be stressed that there is no slight intended nor any desire to upset anyone regarding this decision; it is purely a mark of respect to Steve and Don.

I spoke with David Coverdale last week and he expressed complete understanding of the way it was being handled; thanks David you’re a Gent.

Outside of this event there are no circumstances under which a ‘reunion’ could or would take place.

So, let’s all get up there, shake hands, smile for the cameras and get it done with dignity and respect for all the existing and past members of a very special family.

DF 59 - Hall of Fame: the conclusion

20 February 2016

Dear Friends, Families and Fans,

With respect to all:

We were faced with a hard decision when we heard about the Hall of Fame inductions. It was shocking to us that Steve Morse and Don Airey - who have been with us for 22 years and 14 years respectively - had been excluded, according to HoF 'rules'*.

Fair enough, but they are not our 'rules' and probably don't cater for a band such as Deep Purple, which has existed for nearly fifty years Consequently, we - Ian G. Ian P. and Roger G. - decided upon the offer of a compromise which has been agreed with the HoF and enables us to turn up on the night.

DP Inductees will accept the awards and then the living breathing Deep Purple will perform. Inevitably, this will mean excluding Ritchie, David and Glen from the live performance, but, given the circumstances, there is no other acceptable option.

It should be stressed that there is no slight intended nor any desire to upset anyone regarding this decision; it is purely a mark of respect to Steve and Don. In fact, we would love to perform with Ritchie, David, Glen et al on Smoke on the Water in the encore jam.

I spoke with David Coverdale last week and he expressed complete understanding of the way it was being handled; thanks David you're a Gent.

Outside of this event there are no circumstances under which a 'reunion' could or would take place and so it is unconscionable that our guitarist and keyboard player should be pushed aside after all those years (on the road and six studio albums) of total personal commitment and musical contribution to the band, just to satisfy pressure that has been, in the past, easily resisted.

So, let's all get up there, shake hands, smile for the cameras and get it done with dignity and respect for all the existing and past members of a very special family.

* Regarding the HoF so-called 'rules': As far as I know Nick Simper satisfies them all.

Why oh why was the second one not put out as the official statement? It sheds different light on the situation, doesn't it?

I havent dare to suggest it before, everyone expected that it´s IG/Ritchie relationship issue, because it´s notoriously well-known, but MAYBE (just maybe!!! it´s just my guess!) that the issue is somewhere else - Paicey/Ritchie relationship which IMO suffered seriously and outside of "public" knowledge. We have discussed it here already - Ritchie made a legal claim in 2013 (I remember that it was co-incidentaly at the same day when NW?! was released in Europe) about Deep Purple name and Ian Paice was his opponent in this legal issue (in the name of band)... Shortly after that, it was IP who said during one of interviews that they arent friends with Ritchie anymore.... which sounded a bit strange.

Or maybe - the first one is official Deep Purple position.... and second one is IG´s private one? emoticon Actually - now I´m supposed to be critical against IG, because he slowly but visibly steps away from his radical "no" from 2014 - but I´m not... because I dont have issue with such a performance (current band plus all inducted ones). I would have an issue with "only inducted" ones - because then IG, RG, IP would be in consent with snubbing Steve and Don from RRHOF - and that would be disgusting betrayal from them IMO.

ZZZZZZ. Don and Steve are NOT being inducted, so NO, they have no business being there. This is not about the current TOURING band, its about the band who made a huge impact in the rock music. This is about Speed king, child in time, smoke, HS, PS and so on. Not about Abandon, Bananas, Crapture etc.

Its perhaps put across more politically correct second time around but its still BLOODY WRONG!! Morse and Airey are quite correctly not inducted as their era of the band is totally insignificant and they shouldn't be playing, certainly NOT at the expense of Blackmore DC and Glenn Hughes!!

Backpedal much, Gillan?

I guess the backlash was too much to handle and he thought it may diminish their following. I find it interesting how he quietly put that line about SotW in there...
