I know Zeppelin has sold more records than Purple, but please furnish us with Floyds alltime sales figures before you make such a claim.
Black Sabbath doesn't come close to Purple in sales, thats one thing for sure.

You're correct about Sabbath's sales not being close to Purple's. Sabbath has sold a way more records, mostly due to the high profile of Ozzy's career. The first five Black Sabbath albums are certified platinum, as is Heaven and Hell. The only certified platinum albums by Purple are MH, MIJ and Perfect Strangers. These are the figures supplied by Billboard. I have a press release for Slaves & Masters that cites both Machine Head and Made In Japan as having sold in excess of 15 million copies each, PS as having sold 3 million and HOBL selling 1.5 million. However, they don't supply the source of the figures. It could be record company hype. The cold hard facts are this; As the 70's came to a close, hard rock bands (with the exception of Zeppelin) suffered a major decline in sales. Purple and Sabbath were pretty much forgotten in the States, at least as far as heavy radio airplay and sales went. However, with the birth of Ozzy's spectacular solo career, the Sabbath back catalog took off like a rocket. I worked at an indepemdent record store, and we just couldn't keep Sabbath albums in stock. They were sold when we got them, mostly to young kids who worshipped Ozzy. None of them were certified platinum until the 80's. Look how quickly Purple fell off the radar screen. 1973, MIJ drags MH up the charts (again) and SOTW is a #4 single. Sales multiply and they become the biggest album selling band in the world. Gillan/Glover leave, MkIII bathes in all the glory that MkII destroyed itself building. Burn goes to #9, than falls. Stormbringer doesn't even crack the top 10, CTTB doesn't even make the top 40. Made in Europe doesn't even make the top 100. Purple didn't have any one member who was popular enough to maintain an interest in the band after they broke up. Ozzy kept the Sabbath catalog out there, playing stuff from all the albums at one time or another. He even did the live all Sabbath covers album, "Speak Of The Devil", whch went gold. We had a LOT of kids come in and ask us for the early Sabbath albums, seeking out the tunes they liked off that Ozzy record. Purple sold a bunch of records over the course of their career, but it's been mostly at two distinct times in their career. The first time being 1973 and the second between '84 and '87. Since 1980, the Sabbath catalog has been a top seller all over the US.

But I think that the situation in Europe was much different. "In Rock" is one of the all time most successful albums here in Germany, was more than a year in the Top 10 of the album charts, Fireball, MIJ, MH, Burn and even HOBL were No.1. Purple has 6 albums in the "All time German Album charts Top 100" (based on chart positions), the best Sabbath album is on position 240, the best Led Zeppelin on 151...

I agree this is because Deep purple are globally more popular but in the US and maybe UK there are other local bands who are far more popular. Also Deep Purple has a far greater number of Complilation albums leading to lesser fans buying these sets like 'Very Best of', 'Deepest Purple', '24 Caret', 'When we rock..','anthems', 'Singles-mark-II' etc etc etc. This leads to the some fans buying these best of rather than whole albums which means the actual album like 'In rock' 'fireball' 'WDWTWA' are hit making it harder for them to go platinum.

Gillan 30th? To me, he belongs in the Top 10 of all time, definitely. I'm not positive whom I'd give the #1 slot to, but I suspect (for males) I might go with Elvis. Perhaps he technically shouldn't be considered as a "frontman" - being as he was the show - but when all the elements of what a successful frontman should be are added up, Elvis is pretty difficult to top, in my non-humble opinion.

This cracks me up!!!!!!!!!!!!
Deep Purple have sold OVER 130 million records!!!!!!!
Their over the counter sales are in excess on a whopping one billion pounds worth!
(NOT U.S. DOLLARS MIND YOU!)
I managed a record shop in the mid 80's myself and it has no bearing what so ever on
my knowledge of sales figures(before upc scanning was in place)
but I can say that Billboard is a joke in terms of revealing any kind of sales figures for Deep Purple after 1976,this is a straight fact of the matter.
Billboard doesn't have any honest integrity left to speak of,it's all smoke and mirrors designed to capture the attention of corporate flavors of the week.(bottom line)
They are so friggen corrupt it's pathetic, the way they operate is to keep people interested in the current buying market and smoke screen consumers into thinking the artist of the week is selling more or less than they are,in order to gain quick sales (if the consumer thinks it's selling big, they will run out and buy it) it all boils down to what they call "EARLY CHART PLACEMENT" AND THEY ARE PAID BY BIG WIG COPORATE EXECUTIVES TO PLACE ARTISTS WHO MOST LIKELY NEVER HAVE A FOLLOW UP HIT RECORD OR JUST WANT TO BOOST SALES AT THE EARLY STAGE OF RELEASE.
Black Sabbath may very well out sell Purple in the U.S. but thats the only country in which they do so.emoticon

But the States is where the money is to be made. Top 30 hit in the US is better than a top 10 hit in Germany, France, Russia or Italy. That is just a fact.

Check out this link to the RIAA site. These are the top 100 albums (saleswise) as of August 2003. Some of the figures are staggering. Glad to see the Eagles beat out Michael Jackson for the best selling album of all time. Sabbath isn't on here, nor is Purple. In fact, most of the list is stuff I'd never buy. The Zeppelin catalog has been a steady seller, as has Pink Floyd's. In the US, we can thank classic rock radio for beating the same 200 songs, from the same 100 artists, into an entire generation's collective heads, making them believe that those are the only albums worth owning from the 70's.

To Gillan's micstand:

A)Purple has sold in excess of 130 million records? Where's your proof? Can you supply me with a book, website or anywhere else to substantiate that claim? Did Bruce Payne tell you that personally? Did he supply you the figures to back it up? If Billboard and the RIAA are all "smoke and mirrors", where are your figures from?

B)The US is the only country where Sabbath outsold Purple? Where's your evidence of that? Same question as above. If you're going to challenge everyone else's statements you don't agree with, than I'll challenge yours. Show me where I can see the proof that Purple outsells Sabbath everywhere in the world but the US. I demand proof. You only conceded the point on Status Quo after people supplied you with the evidence, now show me your evidence on this claim.

The Wall has sold 23 million copies.
Dark Side Of The Moon has sold 15 million coppies.

Nuff said!
