New Flying Colors Blu-Ray

Second Flight: Live At The Z7

I just got this 3 days ago. I like it better than their first video. The musicianship and singing are top-notch, as I would expect, but what really stands out is the audio (and video) quality. I don't have a 5.1 surround system, but even the stereo mix is excellent, probably the best I've ever heard on video. Each instrument and vocal can be heard clearly and distinctly. From the Amazon "Editorial Review": "All audio was created with a new audio technology, Phrase Analysis, developed at Manchester Metropolitan University, which creates stunning detail and separation." I would have to agree with that statement.

Re: New Flying Colors Blu-Ray

Watched the "Second flight" blu ray last night. Amazing show, great set list. I find the material from the 2nd album to be so much better than songs from the first one (I would have kept Blue Ocean in, though). Steve's playing is marvellous, and everything I'd love it to be in Purple more often: precise, fluent, melodic, adventurous, imaginative, inspiring. Right now, I'd say this is the best musical situation he's always been involved.
My only criticism, a small one, is regarding Portnoy's performance: he's the strongest and the weakest link in the band at the same time. He's full of energy, ideas and of course it's very muche his band. On the other hand, sometimes I find his drumming too "over the top" for a band like this one, lacking dynamics, always pushing, never "sitting down" on the tempos, grooveless in a word. I love the guy, anyway: so much great music he was involved in!

Won a meet & greet with the band the night after this was taped. They were late arriving and spoke of all the new techniques used to make it look and sound great. They were superb that night and this captures the sound better than any DVD I have seen of any band.
let's hope for more.
