But the others as well did not always fit. Listen to the vocals in Highway Star performed by Mk3 and Mk4. And - sorry to say that - Jon failed playing the melody of TB's Homeward Strut properly. Each musician has its strength and weakness. Tommy was a fusion-funk freak.nondisclosed_email@example.com (bernie)Tue, 13 Oct 2015 11:21:57 +0000 Re: Burn Riffhttps://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p493033,from=rss#post493033https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p493033,from=rss#post493033I remember reading they did tell Tommy to do stuff like Smoke more traditionally. I think he took it badly. They could have got many guitar players to just repeat the same old. Thankfully he turned Stormbringer into the best version either DP or any subsequent cover did. nondisclosed_email@example.com (stuartcuk)Mon, 21 Sep 2015 20:44:00 +0000 Burn Riffhttps://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p493006,from=rss#post493006https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p493006,from=rss#post493006I remember reading a Clem Clempson interview where he said that when he was auditioning for DP, Jon Lord told him to play a song like RB had and that he said 'I'm not Ritchie Blackmore'. How come nobody noticed that Tommy Bolin wasn't playing the Burn riff with the same feel and groove as the original ? Particularly as it was the opening number of the show every night ! Re-Bolin BTW the way, I love his stuff and thought he was ideal. Just imagine how Jeff Beck and Rory Gallagher would have approached RB's riffs !!!! But it's strange that Jon Lord didn't say 'hey Tommy, can you just play this one like the record !'nondisclosed_email@example.com (JohnnyWest)Sat, 19 Sep 2015 18:37:15 +0000
