Re: The best albums of 2014, your personal list

I think I bought 14 of 2014's albums last year, which is probably a record for me. And most of it wasn't rock music but here are my top five:

5. Flying Colors - Second Nature

A disappointment for me after their (album of the year 2012) debut album, but it has grown on me. And of course the standard of playing from these veteran musicians is ridiculously high. Flying Colors are still worthy of the title "best rock supergroup".

4. Moulettes - Constellations

Though I only discovered them last year, Moulettes have taken over as my favourite live band. Their albums don't capture the magic of their live act, but this set of eccentric songs (can't decide if it wants to be rock, folk, classical, or something else entirely) is still jaw-droppingly good.

3. Mostly Autumn - Dressed in Voices

A return to greatness for a band that has disappointed me with their last few albums. While this hard-edged rock concept album is a long way from the folk-rock band I fell in love with 15 years ago, it's their best work for years and proves that they are still the best there is at what they do (even if what they do has changed a bit).

2. Rachel Newton - Changeling

Rachel Newton plays harp, fiddle and viola, sings in Gaelic and English and sets traditional Scottish ballads to her own ridiculously complex harp tunes. And among the ballads and upbeat instrumental jigs are some surprises, like an achingly beautiful classical string trio. The Album is Rachel's best work, in my humble opinion, and is simply beautiful. This is just a perfect album and in any other year would be unbeatable. However:

1. The Elizabethan Session - The Elizabethan Session

Astonishingly good set of modern folk music from a supergroup of musicians who came together just to write and record this album. Eight singers and multi-instrumentalists just seeing how far they can push the definition of "folk music". Sixteenth-century ballads rub shoulders with rocking numbers, and guitar riffs fighting it out with manic fiddles, to show how diverse the "folk" umbrella really is. Absolute magic from beginning to end. Plus: Rachel Newton!

Hello Niko

I was positively surprised to see Celtic Legacy. I thought Dave had stopped that project (I just checked their website). I have no list myself though I didn't get any new music in 2014.

I think we all were also very surprised last autumn to hear that CL lives on. The new album is great and rivals Resurrection as the best CL album. Wholeheartedly recommended.

I'll second that. Well-produced, great songs and performances. Definitely a serious contender against Resurrection.

Cheers guys,

The general opinion from people who have heard it is that it's up there if not better than Resurrection. I haven't seen a negative thing said about it. That's very gratifying and job done as far as I'm concerned. We had to make up for the last album which was a let down and we decided to do it under the radar so as not to invite unnecessary pressure.

I don't know if there's going to be another one yet though. It would be kind of hard to match or top the quality of the new album. I wouldn't want to undo all that hard work by bringing out a new album that doesn't measure up. We'll see what happens over the coming months. emoticon

And another thing I won't discuss is RRRRRRRRRapture...
