Xmas Desert Island Conundrum

Ere’s a bit of Xmas fun for ya. Once again you’ve been sent to a desert island for an indeterminate period of time, which happens, of course, to have comfortable shelter, electricity, ample supply of food and alcohol and a CD player.

As luck would have it, you are able to select CDs to get through the experience. From the list of 10 rock bands below, you are allowed to pick two sets of five sequential studio albums from two different bands plus two live albums from the live album basket – a total of 12 albums. No bitching about whether they are the wrong series of 5 or not! You can take re-mastered including bonus tracks if you like. Choose carefully because you could be on that island for some time!

So, what do you fancy and why? – (note; you could go for greatest number of tracks, maximum amount of music, diversity of music etc).

The Beatles – Magical Mystery Tour, The Beatles, Yellow Submarine, Abbey Road, Let It Be

The Stones – Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile On Main Street, Goat’s Head Soup

Pink Floyd – Meddle, Obscured By Clouds, Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals

Deep Purple - In Rock, Fireball, Machine Head, WDWTWA, Burn

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Master Of Reality, Black Sabbath Vol 4, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

Led Zep - Led Zep, II, III, IV, Houses Of The Holy

Genesis – Trespass, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England By The Pound, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway

UFO - Phenomenon, Force It, No Heavy petting, Lights Out, Obsession

Thin Lizzy – Jailbreak, Johnny The Fox, Bad Reputation, Black Rose, Chinatown

Rush – 2112, A Farewell To Kings, Hemisphere, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures

Live Albums – MIJ (Purple), Live At Olympia (Purple), Live In Europe – Stuttgart (Purple), Live & Dangerous (Lizzy), Different Stages (Rush), How The West Was Won (Zep), Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out (Stones), Strangers In The Night (UFO), Live At The Isle of Wight (The Who), Genesis Live, Reunion (Sabbath), ACDC Live,

I’ll kick off. I drop Sabbath, Zep, Floyd and Rush because they aren’t quite strong enough. Don’t know how to cope with The Beatles (who does??!) and that run of Stones albums is off the charts. MIJ, Live & Dangerous and Strangers are the three best live albums out there. And Genesis cum Gabriel is so beautiful.

So, I’ll have to compromise to get the most diversification. I pick Strangers and Live & Dangerous as my live albums and then struggle between The Beatles, Stones, Purple and Genesis. Given that I can’t drop Purple if MIJ is ditched, they get one spot. So, now which of Genesis, The Beatles and The Stones can I potentially live the rest of my days in paradise without? Reluctantly, The Stones goes leaving a straight choice between The Beatles and Genesis. Jeez, I’m going with Genesis but that was tough……

Deep purple & Black Sabbath.

And because I didn't pick the Rush studio albums, I'll pick Different Stages (although not my fav Rush Live album) and of course MIJ.

I'll miss LZ but the rest, not so much.

To Rezi/RatBatBlu,

Love the fact that you picked Stuttgart!- threw it in to give punters a broader range of classic tracks and TMIB is on fire.

To purpletemple,

Different Stages has three discs and a classic concert from 78 which gives you a heyday performance as well as a broad range of tracks....

Yeah, I've had Stuttgart in the car the past few days. That album just sounds amazing turned up loud as you're cruising down the highway emoticon

A : Not Genesis
B: Not The Stones
C : I Hate Ozzy (but would maybe go for H&H, MR, BA, 7thS & TEI, even though I like Headless Cross even More!)
D : I would hate myself for having Obscured by Clouds
E : My Favourite Zep is Physical Graffiti
F : I cannot not take Purple, one in.
G : I love both Lizzy and UFO, and just got into Rush A LOT lately. My only issue is that in my top 4, two are out of the selection (namely Signals and Grace Under Pressure).

So I take Rush, Strangers and L&D, hate myself for MIJ & Olympia, but then again, the game was wicked from the start !

Geneva, yeah, it's a brilliant show. The 1980s & 1990s tracks work really well. I would have preferred Solitaire to most of the included tracks though. An excellent track in every respect. Would have loved and extended outro solo from Lord, too.

Re: Xmas Desert Island Conundrum

If I had to do a desert island choice, it would go far beyond rock music. There would be some 1910's vaudeville, 1920's early jazz, 1930's big band swing, 1950's rock'n'roll, some timeless blues'n'boogie things and - yes, a bit of rock music too.

As we're on a board about rock music here, I spare you details.
