Re: Gillan 1979-82

I remember being really surprised by Toolbox especially after hearing Naked Thunder. To this day it still gets regular rotation in my player. May have to put it in after this Harrison disc is over!

Re: Gillan 1979-82

The UK tour in late 1991 for Toolbox was a strange one- They played an old theatre called the Northwick in nearby Worcester, who's owner was trying hard to bring live music back to the area (Asia, Diamond Head, and Love-Hate all played in a short time before the venue went bust!)

Gillan were arranged at short notice after a cancellation somewhere else. The gig was poorly advertised, there were maybe 80-100 people there.
Had a great time though - IIRC they did Dancing Nylon Shirt (both parts), Don't Hold Me Back, When a Blind Man Cries ,Toolbox, Hang Me Out to Dry, Smoke on the Water, Maybe I'm a Leo, New Orleans, Lucille, Candy Horizon, Dirty Dog, Bed of Nails, Brazos and Pictures of Home (not in that order)

Don't Hold Me Back was sublime- esp. Lenny Haze on the drums!!

Went backstage after and got a gig poster signed by Ian himself , who was stark naked and dripping wet having just got out the shower!!

Yeah i also so Gillan first time live on toolbox tour in winter 1991/1992 it was not long after first Polish Purple gig.
He played warsaw in Palace of Culture congress hall which is still highest Warsaw Bilding gift from Russians but it is not suitable for rock settings as it looks a bit like smaller RAH all seated.
Young fans went down to the stage but were blocked by security guys who wanted everybody to keep sittings. There was one particular security guy sitting on stage who was demolishing some young innocent boy standing before me until Gillan lift him him up by the hairs. He was so shocked and probably in pain that almost hit Gillan who was supported by quite large Bred Broonfield with heavy bass. In the end Gillan requested all security to leave the stage area.
Dont think it could be possible these days.

It was extremely energetic concert based mostly on Toolbox songs that were not known by me or most of audience as new records were quite rare back and extremely expensive back then in Poland. But it was mad reaction.
Gillan was very ill and probably did not sing well that night but it was not importand as he was in heavy metal mood banging his head up end down throug out the whole concert.
One of my most memorable shows ever.

Gillan has a thing for unruly security emoticon

In the Copenhagen '72 video he can be seen bashing one with a mic stand, when I saw them in Detroit in '98 he hit one on the head with his [sign in to see URL] a loud thump through the p.a. lol

There's a wild story in Colin Hart's book about DP playing somewhere in the US in the early 1970s and the crowd started to move towards the band, forcing them back. Gillan took his mic stand and beat up a big guy really badly. A wise move as the rest of the crowd backed away and didn't try to invade the stage anymore!

If I remember right, the security guard tried suing, but I believe the judge threw the case out. Not the first time a security guard from Pine Knob tried suing an act; Marilyn Manson was also sued for the same thing w/a different security guard.

Correct, but I don't think anything came from it.
