Captain Beyond vs. Warhorse

Hard to choose. Both bands were great in its own way. Captain Beyond probably had better musicians, and the music aged much better. Warhorse, on the other hand, had that great groovy bass playing from Simper. It's a pity Simper and Evans never worked together again after Purple.

It's hard to choose indeed.
I propably prefer Catpain Beyond because they had a stronger, and werider, musical identity. I agree, their music has aged better. I also love their third album "Dawn explosion".
On the other hand, I listen to Warhorse more often, probably because they have a stronger Purple vibe.
Both great bands.

Captain Beyond really had something special.
I feel like Warhorse was more trying to copy dP.
But I like them both, but probably put on a CB more often.

Agree with you guys.

I'd add that the second albums by both were different to their first ones. For me, the favourite is Warhorse's first album. The most 'psychedelic' of the lot is the first CB album, but I actually prefer the second one over that. More straigh-forward, but still varied and Reese Wynans is great on it (he's not on the first album). Red Sea, I don't know, maybe least favourite of the lot. It's not bad at all, but lacks a certain catchiness and drive.

If I had to choose between the bands, I'd probably go for Warhorse, because of the solid first album.

Really looking forward to the CB live stuff. Hopefully something live is released from WH, too.

Simper was / is a great bass player. I prefer him to Glover actually. He would have been great for Rainbow, too, especially Rising.

I don't know how I forgot Reese was in CB. I love his playing and thought SRV & DT really were complete once he was in the band.

Yeah, the trio sounded great, but the addition of Wynans gave it a far wider palette. The Hammond in Change It, the cover of Superstition, the Hammond lick in Crossfire... brilliant!

Captain Beyond all the way! Their debut is a wild, hurtling astral ride through the cosmos! One of the best debuts of all time. They dropped the ball on SUFFICIENTLY BREATHLESS though. It's not terrible, but is lacking the energy and drive of the first one.

Warhorse just bores me to tears. Trying so hard to be Deep Purple, but pale to the extreme in comparison.
