Re: Silver Tongue

I forgot: I was a Mk2 diehard too, I didn't even consider CTTB a Purple album. Then I gave it a couple of spins and listened to that with open mind and without prejudice and I discovered a fascinating album. Different indeed but worth of the name DP.
DP means musicianship, creativity and SOUL, and CTTB has them all IMVHO.

I'm quite tired of all this mark 3-4 bashing going on on some topics. Of course if you approach to those albums waiting for the same kind of music of mark 2, you'll be disappointed. IMHO the odd pair Coverdale-Hughes adds a lot to the directions the band could take: two wonderful and different voices bluesy, funky but nonetheless hard'n'heavy.
On a musical point of view all three albums are more "complete" than Mk 2 ones (except MH perhaps). We've heavy tracks, we've bluesy tracks, funky ones...
You may not like the mellower direction, but you can't call it crud.
Mark 2 creative vein went dry with WDWTWA. With PS they threw the last couple of good ideas, but some tracks seems to be WDWTWA outtakes. The other Mk2b-c, Mk5 albums are a tired reproposition of old clichès and style (a couple of tracks can be saved, but nothing to write home about). The same goes for Mk7-8: _|_ was a breath of fresh air, but after that they're back playing on the same strings.
I'd rather have a brand new direction (if high quality as Mk Coverdale were) than a pale attempt to catch past glory

I don't think you'll find any Mk of Purple as being totally "bash free" to at least some extent.Whether it's about the music, the direction the band chose, the set list(s), the album art work or any myriad of other topics.
I for one will welcome your opinions and defend your right to express them, without resorting to the "your (and by some extension - you) opinions suck" form of reply. Brad (Flight OF The Rat) - I expected better of you, my friend emoticon !
Anyway, Odd Grenland, I just don't agree that the MkIII/IV albums were more musically "complete" than MkII's albums. I think that MkIII/IV may have went further in certain directions (blues, funk, et.,etc.) than MkII, but as far as "completeness", that's only for each listener to determine. And obviously we've determined differently.
The reasons behind the "drying of the creative vein" of MkII are pretty well documented, and have more to do with purely personal reasons than creative, in my view.
As for referring to Mks III + IV as "crud", I might refer to individual tracks as "crud", but only one Mk of Purple comes close to earning that dubious distinction from me, and even MkV showed the instrumentalists still capable of delivering high quality performances, even if the vocal department + some of the song writing was wanting.

I am sorry, I let a gut reaction get the better of me before I posted, that happens with me sometimes and I should learn to control that. As for your opinions, I think I made it clear I disagree with them but that is fine and I will "respectfully" disagree from now on.

And thank you MRED for pointing out to me how bad I came across.

It's always nice to hear why someone thinks and states what they do after
writing such strong views,I'm open to plenty of discrption and in depth defence.
It sounds to me like Odd has his point
in tact now. emoticon

Btw Odd
the minority factor is based on huge numbers and you started off sounding like you don't like MkII,
now you are making more sence,it was just a little strong and offensive-defensive for a first day of posting.

Each mark is in it's own class.

You're welcome, Brad...and I hope I didn't come across as condescending, as I myself have fallen prey to the "gut reaction" form of response once or twice! emoticon
Hopefully, the meditation sessions have helped me to improve in that area... emoticon (to be interpreted as a "trance like" emoticon)
