I think the "stupidest" decision was to hire JLT. Not because he's a bad singer-far from that-but because it didn't add anything to the story. It would have been better to gt an unknown singer.
Coverdale, Hughes & Bolin were different and they were great discoveries and it gave them a chance to get a fabulous career (although some didn't use that chance).
JLT was already established and was too close to Rainbow.
Firing Gillan wasn't great in itself, but it gave us the chance to hear DC, and that's a blessing (imho).
I read somewhere that the following singers auditioned but were rejected by the band and but they chose Joe Lynn Turner.
1. JIMI JAMISON (Survivor)
2. BRIAN HOWE (Bad Company)
3. DOUG PINNICK (King's X)
4. JIMMY BARNES (Cold Chisel)
5. JOHN FARNHAM (Little River Band)
6. TERRY BROCK (Giant)
7. KAL SWANN (Bad Moon Rising)
My choice would be BRIAN HOWE.
As I understand it Jimi Jamison was offered the job but his manager wouldn't let him join.

That's how I heard it as well. I never liked Brian Howe, whether he was with Nugent and especially not with Bad Co. I couldn't imagine him in DP

Re: The most stupid decisions in DP history
I don't know them all, but those I know would have been atroucious in dP (Dug Pinnick, Jimi Jamison, Jimmy Barnes).
Pinnick is too low and too funky (bass player again anyone?).
Jamison is too radio friendly.
Jimmy Barnes is too much of a screamer.
I vaguely know how Brock and Swann sound, but they seem a bit generic to me.

Right. Gillan left, Glover was fired. A shame but we get "Burn" with the best vocals ever recorded on a rock album (imho).
Oh yeah, though I think the boys sing even better on SB.

The obvious "most stupid decision" would of course be the mk II breakup.
I can't see any competition to this.
And all the stuff behind the breakup, but most of the blame would be directed towards the management.
On the other hand I would never have heard Burn, top 5 alltime for me.
Fully agree.

Maybe better, but more seperatly.

Yeah, you definitely have a point there.

Re: The most stupid decisions in DP history
Deep Purple is one of biggest band in the world when Ritchie Blackmore left them in 1975.
The things that's bugging me are:
1. Who else did they invite to join?! Only Tommy Bolin?! I mean Tommy Bolin is somewhat not that popular and Purple is so big.
2. Did they invite Jeff Beck?! If he declined, why the manager did not follow up?!
This are my questions that I don't know why.

Re: The most stupid decisions in DP history
Who Knows? Steve Morse also was not for sure the most popular fan choice. In Poland he was unknown by then, except for some crazy fans of instrumental guitar playing. He was nowwhere near as popular as Satriani was.

Steve has a good fanbase and reputation, that's why he won the best guitarist award.
