Its a great read RBB emoticon The only thing is the guy was with Ritchie during what I personally rate as Blackers WORST live tone and sloppy playing period of his career. Now how much that was down to TMIB and how much was Cooky who knows?

How you can blame tech guy for sloppy playing. I can imagine that beeing Blackmore tech must be quite stressfull he is very demending. Remember when he slagged backstage his tech after one of the concerts of the SIUA tour. He was not nice guy then.

I think a lot of that just came down to the gear. I used to own a Marshall Major and on top of being unwieldy, they're also very temperamental. Like Cooky said, they would run whichever sounded the best the night before and swap out if needed.

So considering those Major's were the same ones he's had all along (just had them recovered in white tolex), along w/the Aiwa reel to reel, the only things that changed over time besides tubes, were his pickups.

Agreed.

But it is crucial to consider the wider context. Most ole guitar heroes sounded weird during that period. Clapton, for one. And magically, they returned to form around 1990/1991.

Definitely.

For the longest time I loathed Clapton's tone. From Bluesbreakers and Cream through Derek and the Dominoes it was great (though it started getting to that thin, plinky tone during DatD). I didn't start liking it again until Journeyman which was '89/'90.

I'm not too crazy about Gilmour's 1980s tone either. Then when you put on Macca's Flowers in the Dirt, it's as if Gilmour's back!

The tone king in 1980s was Stevie Ray Vaughan. Goosebump sounds. The man practically saved electric guitar from becoming a parody of itself.

I love Ritchie's 80s sound, how can you argue with the tone on Stone Cold, Anyone there, Kaybd or even the live recordings such as Tearin out my heart....just for starters?? He's always been a bit sloppy. I listened to Live in London recently and although that recording contains some of his greatest solos there's still a lot of loose sloppy playing during the verses.

I was talking about live sound only. Sometimes it was really dodgy, sometimes it was great. But overall, his live sound was much better in the 1970s and the 1990s.

EDIT: His sound on the Rising tour is perhaps the greatest live rock guitar sound I've ever heard.

I didnt actually mean the sloppy playing, of course thats down to Blackers himself, I meant the godawful live tone he had during the 80s.

Have to agree with that Rezi though the MK3 DP years were awesome as well
