Deep pUrple in Brussels 3/12/2012

Hey guys,

So once again I was there and haven't been disappointed.

Not too much at least.

Gillan was in REALLY good form, his singin was great and he adapted some of his parts (no more screamin in ST, HLM,...) to his voice. Really great!

Paice was his usual self.70% laid-back with glimses of genius here and there and in his solo.

Roger was a bit more "timid" than usual I thought.

Steve Morse was below his usual standards, although he delivered major solos in Hard lovin woman, SKoW and during the impros in the encores;

Don airey was simply fantastic!
This is the first time that he really moves me. Not "Lord-moves me", but his playing was really inspired.
Again, in HLW, the middle part was mindblowing.
And his solo was one of the greatest moment of the concert. Even playing-just for us I assume-a song from our belgian singer-songwritter Jacques Brel: "Ne me quitte pas".

The set list...Well, well, well...

Even though I knew it, NO Morse-era songs were played. Except for Contact Lost/TWDG, NONE!
That's a shame.
They could easily drop TBRO and MIALeo for a couple of newer songs.

Also, I was really glad-a couple of days ago- to hear that Speed King was back in the set list...Well, IT WASN'T. Not tonight anyway.
Instead they started the encores with impros and oldies, went for HUSH, did the bass/drum solo in a r'n'r style (instead of a boogie)-which I thought was gonna lead into SK-but then went straight to BN.
I blame the internet for giving me false hopes! :-)

So for me the No Morse song and No SK were the two suckers. The rest was above post Lord concerts.
Certainly the best dP show I've seen since the Bananas tour (included).

One more thing that struck me, was that they announced on the screens just before the show that the new album would be released in April 2013 (with a question mark).

I thought it was in february, but the question mark says it all, I guess...

This said, I spoke with many friends after the show and all agreed that they were WAY better than on the previous two tours.

I'm certainly glad I went, if only for the great t-shirt available (art nouveau style).

One more thing: the venue was packed! And this is a bigger venue than the previous tours (about 10000 people).

Very good show!

3 concerts, four airfares, taxis, I'm gonna be pissed if there are no new songs played on the Australian leg of the 2013 tour...

I don't know why SM puts up with it. If I was him I'd be livid.

I guess the same could be said about Don.
He's been in the band for 10 years and has released two albums with them.
My best guess is that they're both pro and they must enjoy playing the old dP stuff, after all it is high quality music with plenty of room for impro!

Or they're complete morons! emoticon

Well SM must still really enjoy it because if he didn't its not like he doesn't have the SMB or Dregs to reboot if he chooses. Still though, it is sending a message when they choose not to play more MkMorse material.

I agree RBB, but I think that the message they send is: "we are going to play what you guys in the audience want to hear".

I think it's always gonna be a big debate, and I frankly wish they'd embrace their recent music much more, but they definily are a nostalgia act, for both the old fans who want to hear what they liked in their youth, and the newer fans who go to the concert to hear the classics.

We are a minority.

I say hats off to Steve and Don who play those songs with talent, respect and-so it seems-pleasure!

Glad also to hear you enjoyed Airey's playing. Lordy he ain't (but then there only ever was one), but he to me is the most interesting musician in the band. A brilliant player!

Temple: out of curiousity, why did you feel it was better this time compared to the last 2 tours?

Also, regarding attendance, don't they always play the Forest National when in Brussels? emoticon
