Deep Purple and Christmas

It's almost December and you can already see Christmas decorations set up in stores.

According to Colin Hart, Purple always madxe sure they had a proper Christmas holiday. This was only changed in the latter half of the 1990s, with gigs pencilled in for the holiday period.

Do you have any DP album you associate with the Christmas period?

I have one, Scandinavian Nights (Stockholm '70). I recall it was not released that late in to 1988, but somehow there's a strong association with the album and the December. It's actually a tradition for me to play the album in the couple of weeks leading to Christmas.

I don't do Christmas but a friend came over once and he noticed I didn't have Rapture of the Deep in my cd rack yet (all my cds are alpha-chronological). So the next time we hung out (right before that mythological day), he handed me a new copy of it. So I always associate that album with this time of year.

Alpha-chronological???

Or is it that you put the band alphabetically and then the albums (of that band) chronologically?

Anyway, I don't have any x-mas/dP related mania, but I do try to always listen to HS (MIJ) on the 1st january as soon as possible, and if possible as first track of the year.

As for x-mas, I always seem to wanna listen to the Beatles around that time of year...Don't know why!

Yes, so like in my cd rack Miles Davis is right before Deep Purple, so all of Miles' cds are then in chronological order then all of DPs are in chronological order. I place all of the Sonic Zoom releases in the timeline of when they happened, etc.

Makes it easy that way to just walk up to the rack and not have to search for something. I can just grab it without even looking.

I used to have my vinyl and CDs in alpha-chronological order, but then I had kids and it all went pear-shaped! My first son found that he could lift out albums from his baby-walker and "rearrange" them. I've been much less bothered about the order they are in since then emoticon

Do you keep the CDs in any particular position within the cases? I remember a weird thread on here ages ago where some people said they keep all CDs so they are positioned correctly in the cases (not at an angle).

Haha, I don't get that bad but the friend who bought me RotD does! You can grab any cd from his collection and I guarantee you the disc is seated perfectly in its case. His cd's are arranged alpha-chrono like mine; its where I got the idea from. Before that they were just place haphazardly in any order and took forever to find what I wanted to listen to. Once I switched it up, like I said it made it so easy I could walk up to the rack practically blindfolded and find what I was looking for.

I have my albums in random order, except some years back I tried to place all by a particular artist on the same shelves. Of course, in cases like DP there have been new (ahem, archive) releases, and I didn't bother re-arranging so now the newer ones are on a different shelf.

What really pisses me off in relation to records is that I don't have time to listen to them!

Its weird when I think about it, but if I'm doing a lot of stuff around the house, I'll put a cd on just for background, but if I want to sit and relax, I'll pour a scotch and sit and listen to some vinyl.

Don't forget that some of the members of Deep Purple actually appeared on Christmas rock albums ... including Glenn Hughes and Ritchie Blackmore having their own Christmas albums ...
