Flying colors is just great!
I just can't stop listening to this album. I think it the best new production I've heard in years. Whenever I stop listening to it for a few days and it comes back in my mp3 player, it's always a great pleasure.
Steve Morse is just brilliant and so is the rest of the cast. I believe Portnoy is really in his element too, combining his technical skills with some straight-forward drumming.
At the beginning I couldn't stand the singer-too pop-ish, but now that I associate his voice with the project (and not with some type of Coldplay music), I think he is a good choice too.
The music is great, the sound, the production...It's all very refreshing.

Re: Flying colors is just great!
I just got this yesterday and gave it the old "road trip" workout, and I must say I was pretty impressed with this release. It has an urgency Purple hasn't had in years.Hard to believe they came up with this thing in 9 days or so,although there are spots you might pick up on it being a bit rushed.Hard to say if more time would have made it even better or if it succeeds because they had to move on it.I hope once the dust settles this group can pick up where they leave off and do a follow up and proper tour.If you like heavy rock/jazz/pop/prog type music, this one might have a lot to offer you.

Re: Flying colors is just great!
This to me is Steve Morse going through the same guitar lines licks and widdles, nothing new or original here for me ....it even gets close to coldplay at times.
this is my opinion take it or leave it

I like Flying Colors album, I just cant help myself - some songs sounds good, but THIS album sadly contains the biggest murder of great track I have ever heard.... Who produced it? Just tell me - are you able to listen to Shoulda Coulda Woulda? You have to discover the SONG and the music instruments in that comprimation noise... Original track from original CD sounds like overcompressed 56kbps badly done MP3!
That track is just classic example of loudness war.

Re: Flying colors is just great!
The problem is HOW bands are recorded these days. They no longer use a ROOM,but instead use any room, and DI right into the mixing board/hard drive. The drums get it the worst. They synthesize the sound in the computer to try and replicate what a ROOM would sound like. It's the wave of the future,I'm afraid. On the other hand,it's about the only way a project like this gets off the ground and stands any chance of making money.Since most folks seem to file swap instead of buy,I expect it's the old who gives a f**k attitude, since it's going to get slopped sound wise anyway.Plus, this thing was pretty rushed.I'd REALLY love to hear this live.Maybe next year?

Re: Flying colors is just great!
Just ordered this through Amazon. I really liked the previews. But Steve Morse can do no wrong. I have most of his work and love it all. Will write a review for this album after careful listening.

I finally got around to ripping some of the cd for my file player whilst bicycling, and man, does the poor production come through loud and distorted!Talk about a wall of sludge. The cd is great tune wise and performance, but ptr pointed out,the mix leaves quite a bit to be desired. When old Monkee and Beatle tracks have more clarity in an mp3 player...............

Flying colors
Just listened to the Flying Colors Cd, in a word - awful. Without question simply the worst CD I have ever purchased. WIsh there was a money back guarantee. The vocals are ordinary at best, the lyrics are appalling, production is average, no highlights, not a single stand-out track, no great solos. Awful.
