Re: Great Gypsy Soul
Thanks! That's one to get for sure.
Btw, everytime I see the title Teaser (Bolin's first solo album), I hear Coverdale say it as he does, as if to teach the pronunciation to the audience, on DP's Live in Tokyo 1975. Thanks, Cov!

Re: Great Gypsy Soul
I have to say I'm disappointed with the album. I didn't exactly know what to expect and I don't seem convinced after a spin. The list of guest players looked pretty impressive but I've been wondering what's the reason of mixing additional guitar parts into the already well crafted songs by Tommy. What's the point of this apart from trying to appeal to new audiences and remind the youngest generation of rock fans of a highly respected yet widely forgotten guitar legend. It would be much more interesting to re-record all the songs with new line-up of musicians featuring all the wonderful guitarists present on Great Gypsy Soul. To be honest it was a bit heartbreaking for me to listen to Tommy singing and playing in the background only to hear the not always inspired soloing from guest guitarists. I guess it's a bit of a missed idea although I'm sure guitar high buffs will be happy to check all the nuances, differences and similarities. Yet, it doesn't do justice to the great Tommy Bolin.

Re: Great Gypsy Soul
Thanks for the review, SixtyNine.
I read the text in the link again, and in relation to your criticism, I have to pose a question: who, except the author of that text, thinks that Warren Haynes is "superman himself"?
I mean yes, a great musician, but...
Still, I will get the album at some point. See, I was distracted by the latest Elvis archive release.

Re: Great Gypsy Soul
Rezi, let us know what you think of the album. I'm curious. I gave it another spin today and it's so strange listening to it. I mean, these are classic songs by Tommy that we know by heart, but then there are all those additional guitar parts. Strange, but some may enjoy it for certain

Re: Great Gypsy Soul
Just like you Sixtynine, I'm dissapointed too.
I mean, it's not bad, but it almost sound simply like overdubs over complete songs-which finally it is.
The other thing that dissapointed me, was the lack of creativity coming from all those guitarists, I mean I guess they felt like they needed to sound like Tommy (since it's a tribute), but since Tommy is playing on the album, I wish they would have played more like themselves, and create a difference between Tommy and them.
Actually, the only one I recognised instantly is Steve Morse.
Hughes is great on the two songs he sings.
The bonus cd is also a let-down, the first track is cool, but then the Marching bags are quite simply a long stretch on the Marching powder theme that drags for an entire cd, and again it lacks variety in the guitar playing.
Those were clearly jams, unfinished, construreless, probably never meant to be released.

Re: Great Gypsy Soul
I agree Steve Morse's appearance is a standout, and Hughes as usually manages to make the songs his own. However, I bought the basic version (1CD), I didn't know there was a bonus disc. Blast!

You can find the 2cd pack on amazon.uk , it's quite expensive and I don't know that it's really worth it.

Re: Great Gypsy Soul
I think the album is OK, nothing more. Let's face it, with the Whips and Roses releases and then Teaser Deluxe, we'd pretty much heard all these backing tracks before. Therefore, this album to me disappoints a little because I've heard everything Tommy plays on it on the aforementioned releases.
The other guitarists don't add much in my opinion, mainly just noodling along throughout the songs. I don't think they add anything to the songs, nor do they spoil them. I think Myles sings Dreamer quite well, but Glenn overdoes things (as ever) on Lotus. Clearly, the advantage of this album is that, through the guest artists, it will raise awareness of Tommy and his music. However, If I'd never heard of Tommy Bolin and bought this album out of curiosity, it wouldn't encourage me to go out and buy any more of Tommy's music because, quite simply, I don't think what remains of Tommy's guitar work on the album is particularly brilliant.
Frankly, they'd be better just re-mastering Teaser, Private Eyes, and the James Gang albums as Tommy's playing is top notch on all of these.

Re: Great Gypsy Soul
I think the real problem is,they've just picked the dead man's bones clean. There's still SOME stuff out there, but not a great deal.Having these guys noodle over Tommy's recordings isn't exactly my idea of a good time personally.I just don't care for this approach.
I think what would have been proper before Whips and Roses would have been a remaster of said studio lp's and an extra disc of demos/outtakes.That of course is a mute point NOW,as it's all out there. There is an unfinished track from Private Eyes,an extended Gypsy Soul and some other stuff that could be used to beef up a new release, but they haven't chosen to go there.
And I still have another mix of Alexis that hasn't seen light of day,in stereo, with a BRIEF exchange between Tommy and Dowd.Matter of fact,my copies of the Grind,Wild Dogs and Homeward Strut demos sound better to me than what they released.Seems they tried to hard to clean them for release,or still different versions?
