Guys like Colin, Cooky, Charlie etc are a key part of the Purple fabric, often sharing many stories, bonhomie, not to mention other gems on social media. In a wider sense, at this late point in the game, even the band have said they feel they, the fans and past members/crew are ‘all in this together’, and unlike with governments and other charlatans this rings true to me. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Desperateheart)Fri, 05 Jan 2018 15:37:27 +0000 Re: Out Now: A Hart Life by Colin Harthttps://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p514121,from=rss#post514121https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p514121,from=rss#post514121Just finished reading this: what a great book. For a purple fan, tired of the many general biographies, this is quite essential reading. I appreciated the honesty in expressing the unicity of the purple family scene but also describing the shortcomings, limitations ad errors of the many involved, never with malice or bad feelings, just his side of the story. After seeing him many times ad DP shows he now seems to me like a good old friend.nondisclosed_email@example.com (fdr)Fri, 05 Jan 2018 15:19:23 +0000 Re: Out Now: A Hart Life by Colin Harthttps://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p459486,from=rss#post459486https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p459486,from=rss#post459486quote:Al Erikson wrote: the De Luxe edition is good, but it's still a shame most of the interesting stuff was lost in a flood.. I really like this book, has a nice feel to the text (though I Rahul's criticism above is justified). The most 'shocking' revelation so far is that RB was responsible for (at least) a couple of times his assistant Ian Broad was beat up bad. Got the Deluxe edition, which is a nice package. It's good fun, and the section from the late 80s to the Satch tour are probably the most illuminating in terms of the feelings within the band. However, the publishers should be ashamed of the shoddy sub-editing of the book. Numerous occasions where apostrophes are missing (it happens so often, I actually think whoever approved the copy doesn't know how to use them so takes a 50/50 punt on it) and the word 'quiet' is spelt as 'quite' several times. Hart and his co-author may not be Billy Shakespeare, but the publishers have done him no favours, and undermined his efforts with a lazy publication. But still worth a read once you get past the informal style and liberal use of exclamation marks. Throughout it all there remains an underlying feeling of deep respect for Blackmore, despite his outrageous behaviour and treatment of band mates. Agree with the post above about Roger's strange forward, which is a fairly abrupt piece that doesn't seem particularly fond of the text he is writing about.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Rahul)Tue, 20 Mar 2012 23:08:38 +0000 Re: Out Now: A Hart Life by Colin Harthttps://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p456764,from=rss#post456764https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p456764,from=rss#post456764Thank you for the review, Heimdall! The bad: as being a life long DP and Rainbow fan is my sole reason for buying this book, I found the stuff about Hart's family a bit intrusive and annoying, but I guess that's just him trying to compensate for all the years being away from them and to show that he cares about them, which is nice. In his position, I would have done the same. Hart also comes across as the archetypal roadie in the sense that he doesn't seem to be that much of a music fan, which means that there is scant mention of the actual playing, writing and performing in the book. However, I expected this, and one of the strengths of the book is its honesty - it doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't. In that way, it's also a rather refreshing change from the typical hero-worshipping, over-embellished journo tomes out there. The good: a great many anecdotes from life on and off the road with both DP and Rainbow, which provides a good deal of insight into the workings of the DP machine and the personalities involved. I had a lot of fun reading this book, and my favorite parts where the the sometimes hilarious scenes of tantrums, machinations, drunken stupors, pettiness and plain silliness, such as Ritchie and Candice trying to look inconspicuous in a German hotel lobby wearing dark glasses, big pointy hats and dark, ankle-length leather coats, Ritchie sneaking into to DP:s area of Pirate Sound to listen to the band rehearse with Tommy Bolin, both crews and bands hanging out at clubs together, the stories involving Ritchie's wigs, the animosities and Ritchie's backfiring control strategy behind the split in 1993, Bruce Payne's diva attitude, Ian Paice's stinginess, the band's great relief with Ritchie gone - as well as the resulting lack of creativity, having the band quickly turning into a well-oiled, efficient but largely uninspiring money making machine, as duly observed by the author, whose increasing misgivings about the band's current direction I assume eventually led to Hart being laid off. Perhaps the greatest strength of this book is the way that illustrates how the rock'n'roll lifestyle insulates those involved from normal life, preventing them from maturing, which in turn causes all the craziness and immature behavior which is on ample display in this book. Great fun to read about if you're a fan (or to cover if you're a journalist), but much less fun to deal with if you're an employee or family. Despite it's shortcomings, I highly recommend this book to all committed DP and RB fans, for its honesty and many rare views into the multifaceted DP family tapestry. / H (One interesting point of discussion is Roger Glover's strange foreword - my guess is that he, as is his wont, is trying to be diplomatic, playing it safe with all parties involved, especially the management, since the book is so openly critical of the band's current "another day at the office" direction.)nondisclosed_email@example.com (heimdall)Sat, 31 Dec 2011 12:35:55 +0000 Re: Out Now: A Hart Life by Colin Harthttps://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p456727,from=rss#post456727https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p456727,from=rss#post456727Bruce may well have been the worst manager in rock,So many missed chances by Thames Talent.nondisclosed_email@example.com (unwritenlaw)Fri, 30 Dec 2011 22:31:55 +0000 Re: Out Now: A Hart Life by Colin Harthttps://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p456726,from=rss#post456726https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p456726,from=rss#post456726absolutely, its gives the real stuff for practically the first time. a real insight into RB and the others on the Thames Talent payrollnondisclosed_email@example.com (purplefan1)Fri, 30 Dec 2011 12:10:37 +0000 Re: Out Now: A Hart Life by Colin Harthttps://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p456725,from=rss#post456725https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p456725,from=rss#post456725im on last chapter!!!its been a great read,to hear about Blackmore's antics over the years from someone who lived it is fantastic,i think this is better than Jerry Blooms book or Martin Poppofs deep purple and Rainbow books and ive read them all.nondisclosed_email@example.com (unwritenlaw)Fri, 30 Dec 2011 08:34:39 +0000 Re: Out Now: A Hart Life by Colin Harthttps://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p456717,from=rss#post456717https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p456717,from=rss#post456717http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqkJqZed12cnondisclosed_email@example.com (Dartagnan)Wed, 28 Dec 2011 18:37:00 +0000 Re: Out Now: A Hart Life by Colin Harthttps://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p456714,from=rss#post456714https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p456714,from=rss#post456714Just finishing it (providing I get another half hour of spare time!), has been a great read this far.
