Slaves and Masters
I playing this album in the car.
It's actually an excellent album! Yes, I think TMINE is a filler and LCA is a bit on the cheesy side, but otherwise the album consists of that classy rock vibe associated with DP.
For example, I think KOD is a real strong opener, and I appreciate the understated quality of it much more than back in 1990.

Re: Slaves and Masters
Yes, it's a good album despite various songs not sounding like vintage DP. From this point of view it reminds me of Come Taste The Band a bit.

Re: Slaves and Masters
Sung by Gillan, this would have been a classic MKIIb album. Far better than HoBl or TBrO.

As far as I know the history, Gillan listened to some demo recordings of the S&M songs and thought them to be too commercial and Rainbow-like.
On the other side, if he had agreed to sing on them and the band had decided not to fire him, I agree that it could have worked out better than HOBL and TBRO. Especially as Too Much Is Not Enough - a piece of nonsense co-written by JLT - wouldn't have happened.

I've always considered S&M an excellent Rainbow album

This is a valid point of view, and certainly an excellent Rainbow album provides more listening enjoyment than an average or weak DP album.

Re: Slaves and Masters
I don't think that excluding the vocals S&M sounds any more like Rainbow than most of PS and BRO.

Re: Slaves and Masters
I've actually grown to like this album more now than when it came out. I think the firing of Gillan spoiled the album for me at the time. "Slow Down Sister" should have been on the album, maybe as the opener.

Re: Slaves and Masters
I burned a cd from an iTunes playlist replacing TMINE w/FI&D and adding SDS...those changes have me listening to this album a whole lot more

Mark : That applies to MOST of the Morse material as well
Purpendicular did bring us some mk 2 vibes, despite Morse, because Lordy's return to the fore and the great sounding Glover/Paice unit.
But that way back
