Studio version of Concerto For Group & Orchestra
A new studio version of Concerto For Group & Orchestra is in preparation with the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra doing the honours. We do not have a confirmed list of the rock soloists (beyond the writer!). Although we understand that invites have been extended to members of Mk 2 era Deep Purple including Ritchie Blackmore it isn't known if they will all be able to take part.
The recording sessions will be filmed with an audio release and special DVD release likely later in 2011.
Concerto For Group & Orchestra was first performed in 1969 and repeated in 1970, and was then heard again in 1999 and 2000 with band participation. There have also been performances by other musicians and orchestras. However the work has never been captured for posterity in a studio environment.
What a great idea I do hope Ritchie and Ian Paice can do it.

This statement is on the Highway Star website.
‘No other Deep Purple members – current or former – are involved in the recording. The musicians who are involved will be announced in due course’
I am disappointed Ritchie or Ian Paice are not involved. A real Shame .

Re: Studio version of Concerto For Group & Orchestra
Ritchie didn't like it back then, why would he do it now?
Shame indeed but let's face it, Ritchie will never get involved with his old bandmates again...

to me thats the reason it wouldnt happen. Sounds like the recording is due very soon which wouldnt suit Jons current condition I would have thought.

From what I've heard it's being recorded at Abbey Road at this very moment.

Paul Mann for sure and probably Katia Laska and Steve Balsamo. Don't know about any others.

Re: Studio version of Concerto For Group & Orchestra
I saw Jon perform 'To Notice Such Things', conducted by Paul Mann, in July, as part of the Shipley Arts Festival, in Horsham. I was fortunate enough to have a chat with them both after the performance and Jon told me that they'd just recorded The Concerto with the Liverpool Philharmonic. Jon said he'd heard 'The first edit' as he called it, and it was 'Terrific'. He added that the guitar and vocal parts were yet to be recorded and that he had a 'Wish list', which he was keeping 'Close to my heart'.
Can't wait to hear the completed recording
as the Concerto is one of my all-time favourite pieces of music and the Liverpool Phil are a top orchestra and will definitely do the music justice.
On a personal note, when I spoke to Jon he was his usual urbane and affable self, a true gentleman and I'd like to send him my very best wishes for a speedy recovery from his illness.

Re: Studio version of Concerto For Group & Orchestra
That's very interesting. So when was actually the music recorded, sometime this Spring?
