Interesting point, DP. I like that solo because it's just floating away. A bit like Lordy's end solo in Perfect Strangers.
I remember Simon Robinson (bless him!) writing in the sleeve notes of Mk3 Final Concerts that Gypsy seemed not to inspire Blackmore on stage. I couldn't disagree more, the mod solo in the Mk3FC one for example is great because it's understated and uses the volume dynamics to a maximum effect.
I'm not referring to you, but since we're on the subject, so fans seem to think Blackmore is disinterested if he's not playing blistering solos. I couldn't disagree more. I think it's often has been the contrary. In the 1980s, for example, I felt he was bored and just played these fast (and often pointless if you ask me) runs to kill time.

Sometimes I feel like Screaming would be my favourite song if Jon Lord's piano break during the second verse segued into Gillan's return to the mic, as it did in live shows. Think they missed a trick on the studio version.
