Like a lot of bands with extensive histories, it depends what era you're talking about, Larry. From around '75 or '76 'til just about the beginning of the 80s, the Stones bit the big green skanky weinie. The decade of the 70s belonged to the Who, as far as those two groups are concerned - speaking of theor musical quality only, of course. Not record sales or tickets sold or plays on the radio. Just whose albums of the era were better.
By the way, have you seen Daltry's latest gig? He's hosting a show on either the History Channel or maybe it's one of the Discovery Channels - "Extreme History". Gotta make you wonder whose bright idea THAT was! But, I suppose he needed a gig 'til the Who's next "Farewell Tour"! emoticon
But I digressed there for a minute...overall,it's a pretty tight race between the two - Stones or the Who. Perhaps a poll to let the voters decide the issue? emoticon

I don't care for the Stones after 72'
I like most of the Who's work throughout and I've seen them both live three times and in concert there is
no contest what so ever.I need not say witch one is better
live, that's a no brainer if I ever heard one. emoticon

I've seen the Extreme History show and several
acting performances from Daltry.
My favorite would have to be The Vicar starring Sam Elliot,
speaking of SE he's from my ho,etown of Portland Or,
along with several other movie stars including Tom Selleck.

You know, when Keith Moon left the Who and the building I really believe they lost that apecial wild quality they had. Of course the Stones have an endless song list witch I believe even when Taylor left made them clearly superior. I mean I am no fan of Ronnie Wood, but some of the songs that Jagger/Richards and Wyman came up with, (IF you listen to some of the interviews of Wyman he clearly indicates that he wrote MISS YOU not those other blokes and that is also why Taylor had had enough in 1972)like Mixed Emotions, and some of the songs on Voodoo Lounge were outstanding. The thing about the Stones is all those old hits, As Tears Go By, Under My Thumb, Paint It Black are just priceless. I think the Who would give the right ear lobe of Evander Holyfield to just have one or three of those songs added to their catalog.
