Re: Fav Support act

I would like to add that the best support band I ever saw, was Ozzy opening for Whitesnake in Copenhagen 1983

Best support for Purple... probably The Planets, but Skynrd were good, too.

Best support for any band... tie between Mostly Autumn supporting Blackmore's Night in 2000 & 2001 and La Zag supporting BN this year. La Zag probably just edge into winning spot.

Only 3/7ths of the group played on the BN tour and they did a 20 minute acoustic set with none of their epics. Yes they are the best new band for at least the last 20 years but that wasn't their finest hour. (Still an excellent set, though.)

La Zag, on the other hand, were very cool, used their 20 minutes better, and had a hurdy gurdy emoticon

Best support for Deep Purple was Dio.
The best all time support was Spock's Beard, when they opened for Dream Theater.

Re: Fav Support act

Dio and ELP were pretty good to see, but whenever I think of Purple support Acts, two spring to mind...

One was (I think) The Rage who supported during the first German Abandon Shows in 98. What can you say about a lead singer that nicks Sabbath lyrics, can sing with his tongue sticking out the side of his mouth and is acompanied on stage by a string quartet and a has a break for a digeridoo solo!

The other was Florien ast Florenstein (sp?) again somewhere in Germany in 98? Cute female keyboard player and a leadsinger/guitarist who couldn't get through a single solo without breaking a string!

Cheers

Doug

Florian Ast & Florenstein is also (like Gotthard) a swiss combo. Pretty much bullshit, but one or two songs are funny (sung in swiss German).

Greatest support act, ever, Rory Gallagher 1973.
