Fav Support act

I've seen dP quite a few times now, and the only time that I cared for the support act was for the Abandon tour and the band was "Gorefest".A bit weird, since it's more of a trash metal band, but it was VERY good!
Also saw "Mountain", "Bad company" (PS tour and HOBL tour) but they didn't convince me (that night I mean).Saw "The Planets" in London at "The Flue Show"...made me giggle...and the chicks were good to look at!
Also saw "Girlschool", "Thin Lizzy" and "Motorhead" but that was a festival so that doesn't really count as a support act.

So which band or artist did you enjoy?

Re: Fav Support act

Best Purple support band was definitely Lynyrd Skynyrd. Almost (but not quite) stole the show. Didn't think much of The Planets - nice to look at, but rather false.

Best support band I've ever seen were Grand Prix, supporting Iron Maiden on the Piece of Mind tour. I'd never heard much of them before (apart from Keep On Believing) and they blew me away - superb melodic rock. I actually enjoyed them much more than Maiden. They broke up not long after, and Robin McAuley went on to join MSG (bit of a waste IMO, as MSG were going downhill at that point).

Other good ones were Starsailor (supporting the Manic Street Preachers), Queensryche (Dio), Waysted (Dio), Billy Squier (Whitesnake), Mama's Boys (Thin Lizzy), Wildlife (MSG), Vandenberg (MSG).

I saw Iron Maiden as a support act to KISS back on their Killers tour! emoticon
Saw The CULT before Aerosmith...they definitly stole the show!
Ian Astbury is a magnificient singer, can't wait to see him with the Doors in December.

I love McAuley / Schenker albums, especially the last one they did (the self-titled one I think) was sensational, great songs and superb melodic playing from Mr Schenker. When I'm Gone is one of my favourite songs, ever! For me he really started going downhill somewhere after Walk On Water/Written In The Sand, where it was obvious the man has got a serious problem. Do you know that on his latest MSG album, Arachnophobia, half the guitar solos are played by Jeff Watson and not him?!

Since I've only seen Purple 3 times and only once did they have a support act (The Planets, pants is the word I'm looking for here! emoticon) I don't really think I'm entitled to answer the question. A recent support group that I have found very impressive elsewhere was Y&T on the Monsters Of Rock UK bill in May, excellent band indeed (unlike Moore's poor offering for which the less said, the better).

Oh, and the worst support band I have ever witnessed has definitely been The Darkness (Def Leppard were the main act that night and they rocked big-time!). Excruciating stuff! emoticon

Glad someone else remembers Billy Squier, Big J - he was excellent.

And Skynyrd were in a league of their own as far as being 'support' to DP. I got the Vicious Cycle album on the strength of that show, and although it's not my usual taste, the cd has a tremendous feel to it and I've been playing it a lot. (Kid Rock on Gimme Back My Bullets is a riot!) emoticon

No doubt it was DIO is Germany 2002, followed by Rockland Riders also somewhere in Germany, but 2001. Another good one was a blues rock band (Danish) in Hamburg 1996. The rest (I've seen) has more the less been utter !@#$ (including the Planets). Bad Company Gothenburg 1987 was acceptable, nothing more.

I thought the Dream Theater/ELP support on the '98 tour was pretty good, and Dio opening last year for DP, and this year for Maiden has consistently been good.

I enjoyed Devin Townsend opening with his band for himself in his other band "Strapping young lad"...
