It also, in some arcane way, addressed our feelings as to our own identity; barely 3 years before we were a relatively unknown band and now here we were, world famous, successful beyond our wildest dreams (well, certainly mine)and yet we seemed to be in some disarray. I remember an idea for the album cover being cardboard cutouts of us all propped up like mannequins, as if fame and fortune had somehow rendered us as merely images, or worse - a commodity. The final artwork for the cover was organized through our management. Whose idea for the bubbles I don't recall and although I don't care for the cover much it remains a powerfully prescient image given what was to happen a mere few months away, when our particular bubble was to burst." - Roger Glover, from Simon Robinson's sleeve notes (booklet) for the remastered anniversary edition of "Who Do We Think We Are?"nondisclosed_email@example.com (MrEd45)Wed, 12 Nov 2003 20:07:57 +0000 Re: I've been thinking.....https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p25249,from=rss#post25249https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p25249,from=rss#post25249Herd? Zep played on the so-called "mystique" of being some sort of secret society and the (to me) childish + ridiculous Page/Crowley connection. You know, the "witchcraft" angle. Sabbath wasn't quite so bad, as they early on dis-associated themselves - as much as they could - from the "Satanic worship" tripe that the band's management and record company played on to foster record sales/publicity. Of the three, as far as I'm concerned, Purple - of course - was the strongest musically, overall, instrument by instrument. As for the other two, I did and do break them down like this: Vocals: Plant vs Osbourne = Plant. Although his antics on stage were inferior to Osbourne's - as a matter of fact, Plant's bordered on disgusting - I found his voice far less irritating than Osbourne's. I will admit that at the time, Osbourne's was the ONLY voice that was perfectly suited to Sabbath's music, though. Guitar: Page vs Iommi = Page. Page was clearly a superior player, to me. More versatile and more willing to experiment than Iommi was at the time. Bass: Jones vs Butler = Butler. Terry "Geezer" Butler - one of rock's greatest bass players. Jones was more useful for arranging and production purposes, but Butler was clearly the better bassst, to me. Drums: Bonham vs Ward = Bonham. At the time, Bonham was nearly the only drummer doing a lot of the things that would become standard for those to follow him in the field. Ward was certainly adequate, but not in Bonham's league, in my opinion.nondisclosed_email@example.com (MrEd45)Wed, 12 Nov 2003 18:36:25 +0000 Re: I've been thinking.....https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p25239,from=rss#post25239https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p25239,from=rss#post25239They're not in the shadow! In fact of the three bands , they 're the most active one right now! Of thoose three Purple is the without doubt most musically skilled and they also have the best songs. Therefor it isn't really juste that either Led Zep or Sabbath gets all the attention, glory and publicity as the GREAT rock band of the 70ths. Why is it that way?? Why does Purple have to lurk in the shadows, instead of being praised as they deserve to be?? Any thoughts?? nondisclosed_email@example.com (Gurra)Tue, 11 Nov 2003 20:52:32 +0000
