I've been thinking.....

There are, IMO, three great rockbands from the 70ths, Sabbath, Zeppelin and Purple. Of thoose three Purple is the without doubt most musically skilled and they also have the best songs. Therefor it isn't really juste that either Led Zep or Sabbath gets all the attention, glory and publicity as the GREAT rock band of the 70ths. Why is it that way?? Why does Purple have to lurk in the shadows, instead of being praised as they deserve to be?? Any thoughts??

It really depends where you live.

Many reasons really (probably too many to mention in a post), Zep knocking it on the head while their were still at their peak and Sabbath overhyping themselves with the Ozzy factor being some of the most important ones. My question is does it really matter? The music is there for us to enjoy, who cares whether the average punter can appreciate it or not, his loss...

That's why Purple never were a band who was interested to be a teenie-band like for example the Beatles. They never was intereste to be shown in a magazine as funny, smiling and patiently boys... They just never wanted to be seen as "nice guys loved from every grandma".. So DP were more interested to make her real job: M U S I C!

Then the average punter really lose something here! I just think that you should get credit for what you do and I don't like when Sabbath or Zeppelin take some of Purples.

They're not in the shadow! In fact of the three bands , they 're the most active one right now!
Maybe MAYBE they get less attention, but we(fans)get more for our fidelity!

Re: I've been thinking.....

My feeling as to why Sabbath + Zep seem(ed) to recieve more accolades was due to the fact that Purple (after '70 or so) was a band that preferred to let their music do the talking. Zep played on the so-called "mystique" of being some sort of secret society and the (to me) childish + ridiculous Page/Crowley connection. You know, the "witchcraft" angle. Sabbath wasn't quite so bad, as they early on dis-associated themselves - as much as they could - from the "Satanic worship" tripe that the band's management and record company played on to foster record sales/publicity.
Of the three, as far as I'm concerned, Purple - of course - was the strongest musically, overall, instrument by instrument. As for the other two, I did and do break them down like this:

Vocals: Plant vs Osbourne = Plant. Although his antics on stage were inferior to Osbourne's - as a matter of fact, Plant's bordered on disgusting - I found his voice far less irritating than Osbourne's. I will admit that at the time, Osbourne's was the ONLY voice that was perfectly suited to Sabbath's music, though.

Guitar: Page vs Iommi = Page. Page was clearly a superior player, to me. More versatile and more willing to experiment than Iommi was at the time.

Bass: Jones vs Butler = Butler. Terry "Geezer" Butler - one of rock's greatest bass players. Jones was more useful for arranging and production purposes, but Butler was clearly the better bassst, to me.

Drums: Bonham vs Ward = Bonham. At the time, Bonham was nearly the only drummer doing a lot of the things that would become standard for those to follow him in the field. Ward was certainly adequate, but not in Bonham's league, in my opinion.

In terms of sold records and sold consert tickets I think they hold up quite nicely.
If we count the whole family, they're way ahead.

one thing is sure.
There are no more Led Zep or the real Sabbath, cause Bonham is up in heaven jamming with Jimi and Tony Iommi is having the same old ego problems and Ozzy cant even walk out of his bed anymore.

so, with Classic Bananas , Purple still rocks and stuns the world.

in my honest hard rocking opinion emoticon

Uh-oh...I may be wrong, but is that the distant sound of a thunderous herd of "There's no more REAL Deep Purple without Blackmore + Lord either!" criers I hear approaching in the distance? emoticon That's not my opinion, but I feel matbe you should be forewarned, Brian! Remember, forewarned is forearmed! emoticon
