California Jam (need some help)

Because I love that concert so much, I would like to buy a DVD.

I own this realease from 2006 (with Lay Down Stay Down). This DVD is famous for its poor picture when objects move or the camera is turning. My fine old video tape from 1987 is losing quality slowly.

Does anybody know if there is a DVD available that has a good picture?

THANK YOU!

My DVD picture quality is pretty poor and I've not heard of a good one, I'm afraid.

There is a DVD (not official) that was made from the laserdisc of the BBC release of this gig. It doesnt include Lay Down Stay Down but it does have much better picture quality and some different angles.

That's the DVD I have - purchased from e-bay a few years ago - "Deep Purple - 1974 - California Jam", no cat no. - NTSC, Region 0, with Korean subtitles(optional), presumably its country of origin. It is exactly like the BBC VHS I had - even down to the cover image (Ritchie in front of a spotlight).
Picture quality is excellent - presumably taken from the laserdisc, much better than my old VHS, and FAR, FAR superior to the 2006 official version, which, while great to have the extra track and different angles, was a huge disappointment when released.
Try to find it - you won't regret it.

This corean DVD appears regularly on ebay. It's a pressed not a burned disc. Sounds good. I will order it.

Thank you very much.

I have the Japanese laser disc which has the proper video transfer of the California Jam of which unfortunately Lay Down Stay Down was not included on that edition. The official DVD used the film stock source upon which the original videotape recording was transferred to the film stock. Back in the 70s such a transfer process gave very poor results as illustrated by the DVD and was unwise to use for commercial release. A compromised should have been drawn up which included Lay Down Stay Down and other in-between songs banter from the inferior film transfer and edited in sequence with the superior video footage. It would stick out of place but at least we would have the complete concert.
