Re: Who other than Steve Morse?
Uli Jon Roth wouldn't be interested in joining a rock band, to me he's now like Yngwie with the rock taken out...and even if he was interested he might insist on singing on some songs, ugh.
Schenker would have been the perfect choice if you wanted Deep Purple to have self destructed by 1994.

Re: Who other than Steve Morse?
Schenker is a very talented guitarst but is totally unreliable at this stage in his career, just ask Phil and Pete from UFO.
Ronnie Montrose and Janick Gers would be interesting choices at guitarst for Deep Purple.

Re: Who other than Steve Morse?
Now the real question should have included whether the replacement was chosen for their ability to just be a Blackmore copy cat on stage or whether their writing input was also required.
You could take you pick from thousands of guitarists if you just wanted someone to go on stage and do a good Blackmore inpersonation but to actually give some input on the writing side of things is a totally different matter. As I have mentioned before on the forums, Jeff Beck is not writing anything that could be associated with DP. Several of the other guys mentioned would also find it hard to come up with new ORIGINAL pieces that could be called Purple. Steve does things his own way both on stage and when writing. Is it Purple? well after all these years I think it must be, else they would have replaced him long ago.
IMHO

Re: Who other than Steve Morse?
I'd just acquired three albums last month that's:
Steve Morse - Southern Steel
Eric Johnson - Alien Love Child-Live and Beyond
Foghat - Foghat Live
STEVE MORSE's "Southern Steel" opener "Cut to the Chase" is okay, so is the next track "Simple Simon", I thought that this will be a good but as I continue to listen it bores me again, about three or four of the tracks are okay, but it does not move me. I'd give this record a rating of 5, sorry.
ERIC JOHNSON's "Live and Beyond" is a "great live record", from the opening track "Zenland" to the last track, EJ playing is awesome, he can even play the blues so well in "Once a Part of Me" and as a whole "Live and Beyond" is a perfect 10 in my book.
My ratings are:
Steve Morse - Southern Steel (5)
Eric Johnson - Alien Love Child-Live and Beyond (10)
Foghat - Foghat Live (10) it's 20 years since I heard this again, the best Foghat album!
Steve Morse and Eric Johnson are good friends, some even says that EJ was influenced by SM.
In my opinion Eric Johnson can do a better job in Deep Purple, his solos is better than Steve Morse on stage and in the studios.
