I think they were ok. Good vocals, and all very suitable for the setting. But guys you've all got it wrong. It was the guitarist who was new. Steve Norse, I think his name was. Other than that the original band was intact, I was told. Which was all very good of course. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Atle)Sat, 28 Nov 2009 18:33:33 +0000 Re: Oslo 22.11https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p435504,from=rss#post435504https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p435504,from=rss#post435504quote:David Meadows wrote: Wow! I did agree.   nondisclosed_email@example.com (Atle)Mon, 23 Nov 2009 19:10:24 +0000 Re: Oslo 22.11https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p435456,from=rss#post435456https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p435456,from=rss#post435456And, not to get too private, but I brought my girlfriend to this gig. She's more into Rammstein and AC/DC and so on, but she really liked the show as well. She even picked up her mobil camera to get a short clip of Deep Purple playing Smoke On The Water, to brag to her friends! nondisclosed_email@example.com (Atle)Mon, 23 Nov 2009 19:06:01 +0000 Re: Oslo 22.11https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p435454,from=rss#post435454https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p435454,from=rss#post435454My first DP gig I sat down. Am I growing old? Perhaps, but the band was kicking ass! Paicey's lack of spark didn't bother me at all. Even on a so and so night his timing and personal take on the rythm machinery is exactly what the songs need, and I really think he's the one who really keep the band together. And should I agree mr Paicey lacked spark, then I will stress how the rest of the guys didn't. I totally agree on Roger being rock solid - as always. Some great and classic antics there too, well suiting the rock legend he is. Him, Gillan and Morse really seems to enjoy playing together, and their entusiasm spreads throughout the audience (the latter being the biggest downside of the evening, one could see how the band really had to work hard to get respons, and I bet the sing along to Smoke was the shortest one on the entire tour). King of the stage was Don Airey, hands down! Music and sounds aside, just the way he tinkles his toys is like a dance, a ballett. His playing is a pleasure to watch, his fingermoves could rightfully fill the opera! Grandeur! Highlights from the setlist for me was Things I Never Said (as I have hardly heard the song before, shame on me), and old personal favorite, one I never heard live before, Wasted Sunsets. Thanks for that one! And, well, the entire meny of songs. No One Came stands out as vintage Purple, along with The Battle Rages On, Fireball, Strange Kind Of Woman and Space Truckin. Even Smoke On the Water was performed with an enthusiasm as great as ever. That's really really good! This year has been a good concert year for me, including blues greats like Magic Slim, Jack Bruce&Robin Trower, Johnny Winter and Buddy Guy. All outstanding and worthy of their fanatic crowds, but, at least to my ears and my taste, none of them is close to the show Deep Purple pull off. They play on so many strings it's hard to believe they only use ten strings on stage! One more comment on Gillan's voice; it hasn't grown better the last years, but the man is more mature than ever when comes to sticking to what he is able to do. And that's a loadfull! (Also he looked slimmer than I have ever seen him - one could almost suspect the oldie has started taking care of his health - god forbid! ) nondisclosed_email@example.com (Atle)Mon, 23 Nov 2009 18:58:58 +0000 Re: Oslo 22.11https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p435451,from=rss#post435451https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p435451,from=rss#post435451quote:sail away wrote: Thanks for reviews. I agree that Paice was not at the top oh his game. not that he played badly in any way, but the "spark" wasn't there, as it has been on the other 4 DP I've seen during the last few years. maybe he's just a bit tired - he has spent about 3 years on the road!! Steve Morse was great I feel - even interracting with the crowd, and lookin like he enjoyed every second of it. the middle part of contact lost/SIFLS, Well Dressed Guitar was one of the highlights. especially the latter song got the crowd going and as for the crowd; the worst DP crowd I've seen of the 5 times I've been to their concerts. which is a shame, cause the venue was very close to sold out!!! I'd say about 8000 people out of 9000 and where I was standing, there were MANY of the younger kids Gillan always talk about. about Gillan; seems like he's hit and miss these days. his lower and middle range are still great - but the screams are almost gone. still - not a bad day at the office for him Roger was rock solid as always - and Don was brilliant. his solos in Things I never said / Maybe I'm a Leo / Fireball were great. and his grieg pieces were recieved very well so let's hope they get a few months off, write a new record - and do another tour I would shorten the tours a bit though - to save on the energy nondisclosed_email@example.com (eiricd)Mon, 23 Nov 2009 15:07:21 +0000 Oslo 22.11https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p435432,from=rss#post435432https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p435432,from=rss#post435432DP hit the stage with a solid version of Highway Star, with Gillan in fine form. The band was in good mood, the set list refreshing - they delivered a fairly good show - BUT: As have been said about other recent concerts; the energy level is low, especially from Paice. Only when he plays a break or has to give it a little extra because of the arrangement, he comes alive for a short moment. During the verses he is just crusing along on his ride cymbal like everything is a ballad. Small energetic fills are more or less history. The lowered energy level also changes the dynamics of the show; the difference from "It's now or never"/ cabaret impros in Speed King (back in the set) - and the actual song, is not as big as it should. Nothing really wrong about the concert, but I felt that this probably was the most boring DP concert I've seen - even if the performance was solid. They (exept Gillan/ Glover) just did not seem to be that into it. The power is gone.
