Re: Candice Night "Disappointed" with no DVD release

Bass and vocals may not be the driving force of Deep Purple,to each their own,but I just happen to be drawn to vocals, without them I would be less interested in music.
This might help to understand exactly where I'm coming from, and it's Gillans vocals that do it for me,he was about the third and the last vocalist that inspired me from an early age.

....whatever blah blah blah about Smoke On the Water,I could very well do without this song, but I wouldn't like it any better had Gillan not had such a smooth vocal with great tone,to me a riff is a bloody riff, and although their is great magic to that riff,it wasn't that well crafted, that may be part of it's magic, but Ritchie has way better riffs than that one.

Hmmm, surely the real difference between a singer and guitarist is there potential longevity as a quality artist.

SO in relation to the forever running Blackmore/Gillian debate everyone would agree that the 'vocal instrument' is naturally more effected by age, by smoking, by drinking and general rough living.

Here's the vocalist :-
30 years ago Gillan was a fantastic singer. 20 years, he was quite so good.
10 years he was getting ropey.
5 years ago he was average.
today he's near to retiring, or should be!

Here's the guitarist:-
30 years ago Blackmore was fantastic
20 years ago he was even better
10 years ago he was still better yet
5 years ago he was astounding
Now his playing is better than ever.

Many years gone by, Gillan was a fantastic singer, but now he really simply isn't, he can't hit the notes and he can't hold the notes. If you think he can, that's great for you as your personal opinion, but it's just not actual reality. Sad but true fact, Gillan, great as he was, now really isn't.

Part of this statement is inevidibly true,
the rest is pure nonsense.emoticon

Have you seen Ian Gillan lately?,I have, and I also have high quality DVD bootleg evidence as well of him hitting the high notes and holding them too, much of course to my surprise,he has had a very fine tour for Bananas so far.
I don't know what he is doing to keep his voice in shape, but he certainly hasn't sang anywhere near this good in recent years,if you heard him now,you would be floored.
I'm not talking bull**it here,he really has his voice together right now,and thats no joke.
As for Blackmore,I can tell you that a guitarist of his speed does wane a bit with age,you loose speed thats for sure, and you have to devolop a whole different technique as you grow older.
What do you base him playing better than ever now on??
Some limited exposure you have of Blackmores Night???

Ronnie James Dio and David Coverdale
30 years ago RJD and DC were a fantastic singers.
20 years, even better.
10 years still holding strong.
5 years ago still holding strong with no loss of ability.
today both sound incredible and better than 30 years ago.

Yes, gets better every year and does the one thing that most artists don't do when they get rich and up in age, and that's to challenge themselves.

I'll have to take your word for it. At the end of the day, I have heard "Bananas" which is very aptly titled!, and is a studio album, where every thing possible can be done to make it right and it isn't quite happening there, and I've heard "Come Hell or High Water"( about 10-12 years ago now ) and it's quite evident that he's just past his best back then, so little wonder Bananas is the way it is.

I should stress that there's no disrespect intended in my comments, as I said Gillan was a great singer, backin his day, but now he really isn't, it's just reality that's all, it happens to people. I saw him live many times in the early days of purple and he was, at that time, and to my young ears, amazing. Now he really isn't anymore, which is disappointing to say the least.

Regarding Ritchie's playing I agree his style has changed, improved and matured and I've always thought that the move away from Rock had more to do with a change in ability than a real desire to do something else. It is noticable that gigs tend to be a day apart rather than day in day out. This may reflect his newer laidback attitude or it may be because he can't actually manage too many, back to back gigs, which is what I'd favour. In terms of speed, precision and accuracy, Ritchie has lost none of it, when he does play and his 'feel' on a good night is as good as ever before. He was actually never really as incredibly fast as you have suggested and as far as I can tell from the recordings, bootlegs, videos recently, he's no slower now than he was before, perhaps just more considered. Wasn't it your other friend Mr Glover who asked Ritchie to play fewer notes but to make each one count, so as not to sound like a dememnted bumble-bee on the fretboard. Many many other players are/were much faster, although few managed his 'feel, they were the demented bumble bees!

So again my comments are not directly a critism of Gillan, just an observation that good as he might be, he can't reverse time. Ritchie's tried that for years, but even the wheels are beginning to come off that wagon, as age catches him up,like all of us he's getting old!

Late 80's for me. Then my brother saw him in Florida last spring and will testify to the same.

My Whitesnake 2003 video suggests otherwise, but it's not bad, just not as good as you say.
In other words,he's not what he used to be either, although it's only one exmple,it really has me longing for the past. emoticon
