DinosaurDays.co.za Review Gushes over Bananas!

To begin with: I am a huge Deep Purple fan. But I was not impressed with either Perpendicular or Abandon. They were very mediocre. I even said to a friend of mine that I think it is time for Purple to pack it up. Then came Bananas. I was totally surprised. Is it possible? Purple better than ever. Gillan better than ever. And all of them. This is definitely the best album I have heard in 10 years. I cant wait to see them perform theses songs.

1. House of Pain: This is by far the best rocker that Deep Purple produced in 30 years. There is a certain kind of industrial feel to it. The choruses are strong. The guitar solo is brilliant and then the keys - better than ever. The drums are also brilliant. This song kicks ass. The harmonica is also very effective. Hard rock at its best. 10/10

2. Sun goes down: With the keyboard intro a certain feel was created that prepare you for something special. Then comes the guitar riff - very similar to the Sormbringer album. For three notes Gillan sounds just like Glenn Hughes. Even though this is not your favorite at first listen - it grows on you. Words and melody are in perfect harmony. Again the main feature is the wholeness between the instruments and the voice. Perfect symmetry. 9/10

3. Haunted: This is the second best ballad that Deep Purple has ever done ( The best is Soldier of Fortune). The strings are very effective. And Beth Hart is perfect for the background. The subtle picking of the guitar is brilliant. And with the strings and the bvox a certain kind of feeling is created that forces you to listen to the song over and over. The guitar solo could not have been better. Not even tha man in black can improve on this. Morse suddenly appears to be more than a good technical player. he can create atmosphere as well. 10/10

4. Razzle Dazzle: Very funky. Closer to Abandon than the earlier albums. For me the best on this song is Don's very smooth keyboard sounds. Gone are the heavy Hammond sound and in comes a more funky upbeat tempo. Gillan is brilliant. The production of his voice is superlative. This should be a very good live song. you can feel the excitement. 9/10

5. Silver Tongue: Nothing the same as Kris Kristofferson's Silver Tongue Devil. Drums are absolute the best I have heard on any album. The production technique that Bradford used here are very good. You can actually feel a huge room's atmosphere. The bass line complements it perfectly. Also a sort of an industrial feel to it. The short keyboard solo in the middle is brilliant. And then the break to a perfect short riff. And in comes the drums and the rest. Gillan shows that he can still keep up with the guitar. 10/10

6. Walk on: This song was written by Gillan and Bradford. Definitely the best rock song in 10 years. This is probably the kind of song that Blackmore had in mind when he recruited Hughes and Coverdale in 1973. The difference is that it is Gillan and Glover and Airey that makes the song. Bradford is brilliant on guitar. If Gillan sings: if you can do better than me, you better walk on. The answer is: Nobody can improve on this. Perfection by definition. 10/10

7. Picture of Innocence: Starts of with something that sounds like a jamming session. First the guitar licks, then the drums, then the bass and in comes the keys. Gillan sounds so good - to good to be true. If he sings: mama don't take that train - you can actually feel the train. Perfect build up to a very good chorus. My feet can't stand still. The are tapping. My head is shaking. This is Purple at its best. 10/10

8. I Got your Number: Back to the days of Fireball. Purple not afraid to go forward. A good song overall without anybody who controls the song. 9/10

9. Never a word: At first you wonder whether you have tuned in to the local gospel channel with the church organ. Then Morse and Paice kicks in. And then you realized that Lord was great, but Airey is "better". Can't believe that I have said it. For a moment you get the atmosphere that was there in the middle section of Woman from Tokyo. Very smooth, very good. 9/10

10. Bananas: Dont try to catch the word bananas until the last word. This might well be a better show opener than Highway Star. Again the harmonica are very effective. Morse fills the empty spaces with a brilliant riff. What does he mean by" Two in the hand and one in the bush - getting dirty uhh. There is even : some will rise and some will fall. Very good. The solos between Morse and Airey brings back the good old days of the early seventies. These two guys are born to play together. They should be twins. 9/10

11. Doing it tonight: Drums: 10/10. This is more of a funk-jam song than a rock song. Still very good. 9/10

12. Contact lost: This a short instrumental with Morse better than ever. Just one problem. Tooooooo short. 10/10

I don't appreciate you using the term "mediocre" to discribe Purpendicular and Abandon, but your review on ))) gives me the impression that you're not completely deaf. emoticon

No, this is not my review. I found it on the dinosaurdays.co.za website. By the way, I agree that Bananas is an amazing achievement. My initial concerns about the sound quality have magically disappeared, with the minor exception of some distortion on Contact Lost. The band's performance and Bradford's production are stellar.

The only thing that stops me calling abandon 'mediocre' is the fact that it was made by DP.

Bit harsh on Perpendicular though i thought.

One point; how can somebody that likes Bananas NOT like Purpendicular?! I really rate the new album but surely the first Morse era album is in the same style, albeit of far superior quality.

With all due respect CG, I couldn't disagree with you more regarding _l_ being superior to Bananas. IMHO )))s is one of the all time great DP cds, while _l_ was a good release. _l_ has some clunkers on it, while )))s has no fillers and just kicks total ass. Plus the production and sound quality is a thousand times better on )))s.
