Quatermass... Who they?!

Right, I got my first Quatermass CD yesterday (the Long Road one from the 90s version of the band) and I am spinning it at the moment. My feelings about it are mixed, it sounds very professional and the production rocks big-time (something I always pay attention to, picky or what emoticon) but the songs are largely a faceless affair, they just don't have something extra special to lift them from the 'very ordinary hard rock' description. A voice which sounds all too similar to JLT doesn't help matters (I love JLT but there was a point in the 80s where most AOR singers sounded like that)... I was contemplating getting the 70s albums but this has put me off a bit (though I suppose I should give it a few more spins before deciding). Do they sound anything like Long Road?

Is Nick Simper the bassist on all songs?

Does Don Airey guest on some tracks?

Yes, it's the Nick Simper/Mick Underwood band (with Airey on some tracks).

I sse you don't like the Gillan band members as well as his
solo work 'eh PT. emoticon

Not only do you knock his work during that time period, now you are resorting to bashing
the fine drummer that is Mick Underwood.

I suppose you are from the camp who also use the excuse that Gillans albums weren't produced. emoticon

The problem with GILLAN, the band, is that the rhythm section is very bad!Underwood and Mc Coy are second zone players, and I'm not tryin to be mean or something, they just are...There's no groove!
Colin Towns and both Torme and Gers are fine musicians.
Also, I believe that Ian's voice wasn't at its best during that period, but that doesn't mean I don't like the albums. There are more pleasurable things than bad things.
Same goes for almost any post-purple related bands.Whitesnake lacks of real guitarists until Sykes arrives but then they went AOR and lost that bluesy feel.
Rainbow had some great moments (even with JLT), but never reached the magic of dP,...and so on.
I guess that's why dP is my fav band and not the others!
But again that doesn't mean the rest is bad!Not at all, it's very good, just not super-mega-great.
That said, Underwood is really a bad drummer.Sometimes it's painful having to listen to him, tryin to catch the right groove...But then again when you've heard Paice, it's hard to find anyone groovier!

BTW, when have I bashed his solo work?
I've always liked Naked Thunder and Toolbox and even more the IGB!
As for the production, it's very raw and hard, just like it needs to be for that type of r'n'r.
Don't make me say things I haven't said or don't even think! emoticon

Re: Quatermass... Who they?!

I know more about the "original" Quatermass of the early 70s, with Pete Robinson on guitar/vocals;Mock Underwood on drums + John Gustafson (one of rock's greatest underrated bassists!) on bass + vocals. Formed (?) and managed originally by Gillan + Glover's old manager with Episode Six, Gloria Bristow.
I had read of the reformation, but haven't heard them play and don't know too much about them.
Of course, as the story goes, it was one of their songs, or written by them (Quatermass) anyway, - "Black Sheep of The Family" which Blackmore wanted to record with Purple MkIII, and they - in particular, according to Blackmore, Lord + Paice - put the kibosh on the idea. Blackmore was determined to record it, so this was the track he had in mind for his solo single or album, which led to his hooking up with Dio + Elf. We're all pretty familiar with what happened after that...

Purpletemple,
by Gillan's solo work I meant his band
not his after Purple markIIb work. emoticon

You have made negative comments about this
and you know it.His voice not being at it's best is not exactly the way I remember you putting it.I twist nothing and I remember
plenty.
McCoy second zone?No way, he kicked ass with the best of 'em.

Btw
were Mickey Moody and Bernie Marsden
not "real" guirtist's? emoticon

Mick Underwood is a fine drummer just a little older than the rest.
He is also a grass roots member of the Purple family going clear back to the
Outlaws with Blackmore and Episode Six with Gillan and Glover,he shouldn't be underlooked by you or any other big Purple fan.(if you didn't already know)
