And so is Paice as a matter of fact. DP didn't fit into the Americam Summuer of Love fest because there was no left-wing ideology behind them, just musc. And to be honest, that's probably why Purple are remembered for the music they made, not for their views. And that's great, because politics and ideologies always divide people.nondisclosed_email@example.com (SixtyNine)Sat, 30 Aug 2008 11:19:32 +0000 Re: Did Mark 1 Purple ever meet/associate with the S.F. bands of the era?https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p420200,from=rss#post420200https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p420200,from=rss#post420200 Just to 'speculaborate' a bit further, I've always gotten the feeling that there may have been a sort of 'backwash' feeling of resentment(?) jealousy(?) towards DPMkI by some of the other musicians at that time due to the 'Star Treatment' they were getting from their record label at that time, Tetragrammation, and by extension, a lot of the segments of the media & of course, their own management. Perhaps a lot of those musicians - particularly the American ones - just didn't feel that DP had 'earned their chops' so to say, and weren't deserving (in those musicos' minds, anyway) of such 'first class' handling (limo transport, numerous press conferences, tv appearances, etc.,etc.) before DP had even played their first American concert.  Like I said, this is all just 'speculaboration' (I just made that word up...pretty good, huh?) on my part, so anyone reading it please take it that way.nondisclosed_email@example.com (MrEd45)Thu, 31 Jul 2008 15:17:42 +0000 Re: Did Mark 1 Purple ever meet/associate with the S.F. bands of the era?https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p420176,from=rss#post420176https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p420176,from=rss#post420176 I'm not sure how much association DPMkI had with other artists on the west coast in '68, but we do have this from Ian Paice (courtesy of Chris Charlesworth's "Illustrated Biography") : "We went up to San Francisco but we were rather out of touch with what was happening there. They were still going on about peace and love and here was this English band being all aggressive, thumping away and playing very, very loud. They didn't know what to make of us then."nondisclosed_email@example.com (MrEd45)Wed, 30 Jul 2008 15:37:54 +0000 Did Mark 1 Purple ever meet/associate with the S.F. bands of the era?https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p419487,from=rss#post419487https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p419487,from=rss#post419487When I think of Mark 1, I clearly think of London, 1968/69...other parts of NW'ern Europe, and yeah....maybe LA for that Playboy TV version of "Hush". When I think of Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Grateful Dead, It's A Beautiful Day, Quicksilver Msgr. Service, I think of San Francisco. Question is, since Purple also had a distinctly "psychedelic" sound with its Mark 1 lineup, how do you think they would have compared to that sound going on in San Francisco? Was it comparable, or vastly different for certain musically technical reasons? If Jon, Nick, Ian, Ritchie, and Rod had rented a victorian in the Haight instead of a flat in London, how well would they have fit into the San Francisco scene? What if Jon had written the Concerto for Group and Orchestra while sitting in Golden Gate Park? And performed it at the SF Opera House, The Warfield Theatre, or The Golden Gate Theater for that matter? Did Deep Purple ever spend enough time in SF to pal around with the Jefferson Airplane or the Grateful Dead? What did Jon Lord, Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Paice, Rod Evans, and Nick Simper think of the SF scene during the Haight/Ashbury era? And maybe equally important: What did Marty Ballan, Grace Slick, Jerry Garcia, or Carlos Santana think of Deep Purple? Does anyone have any documentation on this?nondisclosed_email@example.com (B3Burner)Wed, 09 Jul 2008 07:35:54 +0000
