Adelaide Symphony Orchestra plays Deep Purple, March 29th
I have to say that this performance was a hell of a lot better than I was expecting.
The concerto sounded absolutely great. When I first watched the DVD of the 69 performance I was a bit disintrested by it, but it has slowly grown on me, and seeing it live was a blast. The "group" role was well filled by the Zep Boys (a local band, renowned Australia wide for their Led Zeppelin tribute show), and Jon Lord.
The second half of the show featured the Zep Boys and the orchestra playing mkIIs "greatest hits". Unfortunately Jon did not re-appear immediately after the interval, and for the most part the organ role in the songs were filled by the orchestra.
The orchestral arangements were great though. They added a further melancholy touch to the bridge in Woman from Tokyo, had a great punch in Smoke on the Water, and the cello backing to the guitar solo in Highway Star was genius.
Steve Williams guitar work was an adequete fill in for RB. At no time was it jaw drapping, but it was solid, and he managed to get a sound that very similar to that Ritchie had at the '69 Albert Hall show.
The star of the second half of the show was the frontman Vince Contarino though. I thought his vocals were almost unbelievable. When Jon finally returned to play Child in Time, Contarino lifted his game even further. Made in Japan aside, I haven't heard a better live vocal performance of the song. He hit the screams perfectly.
In summary: Worth every last cent! If a recording of this ever becomes available my advice would be, "get it".
Now, bring on Whitesnake tommorow.

Thanks for the review. I thought they would only be doing the Concerto... it would be interesting to hear the orchestral versions of the other songs... can't really imagine a CD release for anything like that though.

I cannot really see a CD release happening either. I can try to be optimistic though.
As some one who enjoys occasionaly dabbling in classical music, I am a semi regular at ASO preformances, and browsing their shop, it seems only rarely do their performances get released.
