Re: Perfect Strangers ( the album ) sounds dated!
Surely ANYTHING that the Purps do should sound dated.
Otherwise they would sound like either Darkness (PURLEASE!!!!)
Atomic Kitten (No comment. I mean REALLY No comment!) Or Wobbie Rilliams.
Now - if they LOOKED like Atomic Kitten my complaints would be kept to a minimum, Really, they would

Re: Perfect Strangers ( the album ) sounds dated!
Well Purple aren't exactly a newfangled Jimmy Eat World band nor are they Numetal, so I never listen to their stuff thinking of it being dated. I just listened to Perfect Strangers all the way through last week, and was really blown away by it all over again. The whole thing is great, outstanding and it's a masterpiece. I don't get the same great feelings when I put on HOBL, although there are some good songs on there. PS is brilliant. The word dated never came to mind.

You want dated? Into the Fire on the original In Rock. I thought it was a flaw on my CD. But I heard another and it too was crappy sounding. Haven't heard the remastered version. Until then I've got a live version from Stockholm 1970 that kicks ass.

In Rock again was ahead of it´s time.
Don't think it was to be honest. Blue Cheer started the hard rock ball rolling with the heavy riffage. THe Yardbirds and The Kinks had already flitted in and out of the heavier side of rock n roll. Then you had the stinky Jeff Beck Group influencing people like Led Zep. They burst on the scene with their heavy blues rock. Then came Deep Purple In Rock.
The album was very much of its time. It just happened to be the best of its era!

Re: Perfect Strangers ( the album ) sounds dated!
In Rock was great don't get me wrong, but for some reason it sounds like Into the Fire was recorded in a garage. Every other songs quality is fine.
As far as Perfect Strangers goes I think it holds up well. Considering the Grunge thing happened by the end of the decade and we had to deal with angst ridden power chords drenched with distortion an wah-wah. To me that sound was dated.

Re: Perfect Strangers ( the album ) sounds dated!
Into The Fire does suffer from a sandpaper effect.
I think this is a first,
I have to disagree with Rahul for once.
There is nothing stinky about the Jeff Beck group.
Jeff is easily as good as Purp Or Zep and any other
artist's from that time.
You should give him more credit,
I suggest you start by checking a little further
into his work, especially at the time.
Also Rahul ,you can say what you want about
Blue Cheer but Iron Butterfly was first,
check 1967's "Heavy".
That was their first album and probably the first
full heavy metal album,(catagorically)

I've got quite a few of his albums. That's enough.
Haven't heard 'Heavy', but if In a Gadda Da Vida is a suitable yardstick to measure Butterfly's heaviness, then Blue Cheer's Vincebus Eruptum is far far heavier.

Don't ever be, Ian! But if you are able to cut through with even less words than our friend Larry needs, that's great!
(no offence Larry!)
