The long jams were a typical 70's thing. No one could get away with 30 minutes guitar- or Hammondsoloes today.
Allman Brothers can get away with long instrumental jams. They even play 10 min. drum solos and people seem to like it.

Re: DP 'In Concert - 1970-72' CD
I bought DEEP PURPLE IN CONCERT 1970-1972 twice. The first time was the EMI version and the second was the Spitfire version.
The 1970 show sounded better with the Spitfire mastering, which didn't have that awful "fake stereo" sound.
The 1972 show sounded much better with the EMI version. I believe it wasn't mastered as hard. Also the EMI booket was nicer.
So, between the two, I made myself one great version.

Yes, you're absolutley right, they do! Great band! Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks in the same band? Oh yeah baby!!!!

I agree with Peter, this is 'better' than MIJ IMO. Fortunately, we have both.
It's interesting to compare IC 1970 to Stockholm 1970. For example, RB dominates WTN on IC while Lordy steals the show on Stockholm version.
As for 1972, I prefer the more relaxed vibe of the BBC show. It also is more song-orientated, which I like a lot. This is not a fair thing to say, but I always wished DP had done only one long jam during those days, not two. Having said that, I love the way the lads played.
I don't agree with Lordy stealing WTN in stockholm. RB has his own 10 minute showpiece in wich he steals the show, imo.

But the stoner hippies don't come see DP anymore. The Allmans inherieted all the Grateful Dead fans.

Re: DP 'In Concert - 1970-72' CD
I've been saying it for years - "In Concert '70 - 72" is (to me) the definitive live document of Deep Purple for that era...the performances of the tracks on the '72 disc in comparison to the performances of the same tracks that later would appear on "Made In Japan" is well...incomparable. This recording makes "MIJ" sound positively...tired & (almost) listless...I'm sure that a lot of that is due to "IC '70 - '72" being performed & recorded prior to some extensive touring that took place between March & July of 1972, and 5 months prior to "MIJ".
I fully admit that between 1973 and 1980 had anyone expressed the opinion to me that I just did in the previous paragraph (that there was or would be a superior recording of DP live in concert from this era other than "MIJ"), I would've told them they were insane...going by that criteria, I guess I've been certifiably committable since 1980!

That's the great things about these shows: There something for every fan!
For me it's the early part of the track when they are trading solos. RB plays excellent solos, but Lord is just unbeatable here. Somehow I feel RB feels the same and lets Lord solo in greater lenght. Very jazzy... Amazing sound to the Hammond as well, sort of transparent.
