OK its 40years of DP this year and the only thing i've heard is Jon Lord saying he wants to do something.
It really should have some sort of celebration of the bands history. I know Ian says only look forward etc but it would be a crime (to the fans!) if something didn't happen.
what you all think?
A few MKII shows would be great, maybe a short tour. All shows recorded for CD and DVD.
MKII wouldn't last so I see no reason for them to reunite for more than a short tour. Blackmore and Gillan in the same band for a long period of time wouldn't work. It didn't work before, and nothing has changed as far as I know.
Anyway, after a short celebration the current line up (that I find to be very good) could go on about their business.
But... I wont hold my breath waiting for a celebration, and I wouldn't be so dissapointed if it didn't happen at all. Can't have it all y'know...

I was counting all Marks. Just the time where the band was split isn't valid for me to count in.
I know they always did it this way. But somehow it is a little bit fudged.
By that logic, many anniversaries wouldn't be valid. How could the Battle of Britain have a 50th anniversary if it only lasted a few months? Why do we still celebrate Christmas when Jesus died 2 millenia ago. An anniversary doesn't necessarily mark the length of something. It can also mark the time passed since a specific event, eg the birth of Deep Purple.

A real 40th anniversary it isn't anyway.
Interesting point. This year, it is 40 years since the band started. However, is this the 39th anniversary? Plus, the band doesn't turn 40 years either, as we know.
However, I'm ready to party two years, or the eight or so which the band was split!
Why ain't it a real 40th Anniversary? One might like or dislike what happened with Purple during those 40 years, it's still the year of the anniversary of Deep Purple's formation.
They should make one last double album, with a section featuring all past members alive, and possibly revisit some of their stuff. Then, they should call it a day and follow solo career. That would be "chic".

Re: DEEP PURPLE'S 40th
Even though I don't see it happening (damn sceptical me), that's a brilliant idea, Al!
Get together all the living members (inc. Satriani even if he never recorded with the band) and use various combinations on the tracks (e.g. Gillan and Coverdale singing on a track together, Roger playing bass while Hughes is singing, etc.). It would be especially amazing if everyone willing contributed new original material, of which the album would solely consist of.
I don't think anything like this has been done by anyone, again, what a fantastic idea!
Jon, are you reading this!!?

Somehow, I don´t think Blackmore nor Gillan would be interested in such a project. Probably not Coverdale either. To bad.

Re: DEEP PURPLE'S 40th
Let's be realistic. The only thing we have a chance of seeing is a one-off Mk2 reunion in either 08' or 09'.

Re: DEEP PURPLE'S 40th
If I were in a famous band (I'm in a band, but we're not famous...yet!), making lot's of money and having the time of my life with good friends, and someone suggested to me that to celebrate "whatever" I should get all former members together and make a record with them all, I would say something like "Why would I bother to do that? I'm perfectly happy with things as they are."
My point is that.... I'm in a band. We've had different members over the years, and there is a reason that they're not in the band anymore (some aren't good enough, some smoke to much dope, some just don't have a clue, some you don't get along with etc.). Right now our band has got the members that make everything work according to what we wanted from the start. Everyone has their say and everone has got some ideas to explore. Why should we change anything when it works great?
Without comparing my band to Purple, they seem to be exactly where they want to be. Why would they risk that by bringing in past members to do a record, when the current line up seem to be the most happy Purple line up ever? What would be the point? They will never make a new Why Didn't Rosemary, Speed King, Smoke On The Water or Burn. That was magic created in the past, and you just can't recreate such magic even if you bring together the past members of the band.
For Deep Purple's 40th anniversary I would certainly enjoy a few shows with MKII or MKIII or whatever, but in the long run I think the best thing to do is keep things as they are. And...the current line up are extremely good live!!!
