I didn't know he was dead. emoticon

It's just my opinion, but I believe the following was "aimed" at me...

quote:

MrSnip wrote:...this forums has all kinds of members. Those who would pay to get backstage with Gillan's mom, and those who wouldn't pay to see their crap today.

...at least, the last time we had "words" it was about how anyone who would pay to go backstage wasn't a "real fan".

But that's all water under the bridge, although I do wonder if his opinion would change if he knew that on this last US tour, I not only didn't have to pay for my tickets, I also was invited to go backstage...

...for zero dollars...

So...am I a "real fan" now?? emoticon emoticon

What's this nonsence about "true fans" and "not true fans"? Is this kindergarden or what???

The fact that we hang out here at the DEEP PURPLE FAN FORUM says it all, doesen't it?

Well, Mr Snip, we could have an interesting discussion about what constitutes a 'fan'.

I doubt it would be long nor interesting.

I haven't bought a DP album since HOBL. Now, I only listen to MK11a. I'm sure we all agree that that was the 'golden era'! So I still consider myself to be a 'fan'. But not a 'fan-atic', so to speak.

Well, I've bought them all, almost, and got the rest in presents. But, now a days, I only listen to MkIIa (or MkIIc live 1993), or MkIII...make a note to listen to CTTB soon.

I would question the fan who finds it hard to be critical of absolutely anything produced by the band.

I know what you mean. That's for teenage girls (or preteen) not to be critical, but of course, the critic has to be something else than just...It sucks. (please don't think that I believe you have that attitude.)

It's just not credible. I mean, even The Beatles (my all time favourite band) could come out with some complete dross. Of course, one can say, "well, that's interesting", but that doesn't mean it's not rubbish.

Agreed 100%

One of my fave guitarists, Jeff Beck, can serve up some off-the-mark, rubbishy performances but on the other hand, there are the sublime moments to make up for it. Bit like DP, I suppose!

Again I agree. What am I doing?, I'm Mr BlackHat, I'm not supposed to agree. My agreement does not so much go with your Jeff Beck-statement, as I've never really cared about Jeff Beck, but each to their own.

Sometimes, I'm even even prepared to stick my neck out and say that Blackers was far more consistent in the studio than he was live, but, heyho, along comes MIJ and WDWTWA to prove the opposite!

Actually, is that not natural? In the studio they can repeat it until they/the producer(s) are satisfied, live, only first take counts.
quote:

What do I know? It's only an opinion, and only the fanatic will feel hurt by it!

I know the word "fan" is short for fanatic, though as you, I use the term more losely these days. In my "youth", I refused to call myself a fan, exactly because of that. And I guess, that's why it's called DPAS, instead of DPFC.

I myself have been behaving rather "fanatic" in periods of my life, but still always tried to keep level headed.

Music is entertainment. It has to entertain the audience. Different things entertain different people. For example:
I fell in love (musically) with early MkII. Never cared about Machine Head. It was awfully sounding (the vinyl), and just downright pop until played live. I fell in love with the long live jams. I couldn't give a toss about if it was "easy" noodling or out of place, the point was it was exiting.

I still believe, that without the power live, Purple wouldn't be known for anything except some pop music, well maybe with the exception of In Rock, MIJ, WDWTWA and Burn. The MkMorse stuff falls out of catagory. The singer believes it's rap. The guitarist thinks it's jazz-fusion, the (former) keyboard player thought it was the usual stuff. The bass player was just there in case of emergency, and the drummer they had to wake up several times during the recording sessions. Sometimes, there were not enough time to do a retake, and they hoped it wouldn't be noticed.

I have come to accept that. DP can do what they want, and so can I.

Despite giving some great shows in 1993, no thanks to the rusty old nail, the biggest mistake since the reunion was to get Gillan back. Yes, Turner should have been fired, and if they weren't able to find a proper replacement, they should have called it the day at that point. That was their second biggest mistake. The biggest mistake was the reunion, with such a lacklustre piece of pap-crap as PS.

I never forget my initial disappointment when I heard it. I was even buying the MC just to listen to it on board my vessel, until I got home and heard the Vinyl.

Maybe, the biggest mistake of all times of DP was to hire Bruce Pain. He was using DP as DP uses/used their audience...milk cows.

You got me going huh?

Actually, my comment about Blackers studio v. live work was 'altered' in my original post. I had actually written - 'better in the studio than live'. But perhaps I was unfortunate when I saw him the 5 times I attended Purple and Rainbow gigs. Dunno. He often seemed uninterested to me, and spent more time lying on the floor, smashing guitars and glaring at Gillan. On the other hand, that's probably time clouding my memory!

Exactly, from this moment on, I want to be called a connoisseur and an appreciator... And don't think it has anything to do with Renaissance.

Ha ha. If signatures used by some members are anything to go by, I'd say a passerby might get this impression.
