Probably not sober is right but anytime you can put Steve McQueen and Mickey Mouse in the same line of a song is thinking on your feet to me emoticon

I think Mickey Mouse also featured in No,No,No at the same session.

What is wrong with it? That was recorded a little time before they all came out to Montreux...

If they could do something like that when it was "not a good day at the office for DP", what were they capable of on a good day???

You're having a laugh, surely? That's crap, IMHO. IG is obviously 'under the influence', and hasn't yet written the lyrics yet, and......well, what's the point. Either I'm too old for this !@#$ or there is some serious 'blind hero worshipping' going on.

I repeat. That is crap. IMHO, of course.

And I should add....if it was unfinished, then they shouldn't have played it live for recording then, should they? Some people will listen to any old crap, wont they?

I totally agree. It's absolute garbage! It's just a bad performance of an unfinished song, not a "loose jam" as people call it. It was a desperate attempt to perform something new on a show. I'd hate to have heard the version at Portsmouth Guildhall.

And still succeeds in being far superior to the abomination and farce that were mkIII and mkIV's poor attempts at any mkII song.

I don't think MkII(a) ever did something desperate. They were at the peak of their career at the time...

You may well be right...but it doesn't stop it from being crap, does it? 2 wrongs, etc etc..... I know what you mean, there's a youtube Mk1V, with Bolin mudering the guitar solo (due to a numb arm from too much shooting up?) and some pretty awful singing by Coverdale and Hughes.

At last - BGGLP - I was beginning to think I was completely deaf!

I actually quite enjoy some of MK3s versions of MK2 songs(glenn Hughes whooping apart)and most of the MK3 versions of HS I have heard were instrumentally much better than this
they also did superb(instrumentally that is)
versions of SOTW and ST just watch the Cal Jam for evidence MK3 were a superb band but obviously different from MK2.Now Mk4s versions you have a point they were dismal or at least the ones I have heard

BTW, that recording is on the LLRO box set along with a version of No No No taped in the same tv show. I like 'em both. Nice loose versions.

Also on the Rock Profile vol. 1 and
here

Niko and Al,

how can you possibly compare the No,No,No recording, which is a really good version, to the complete train wreck that is the Highway Star recording? As I said before, I can't believe that the Highway Star recording was meant for human consumption. It's a s though a different band is playing!

People don't go into it knowing it's crap, they hope it's good, realize it isn't, leave the page, come back thinking they were mistaken, leave the page, doubt that the ever-proclaimed name of DP could be that bad, go back to the page, view it again, and then never visit it again because they finally understand the magnitude of how bad it is.

Absolutely. I've watched it 3 times today, just to confirm my thoughts!
