Not a good day at the office for DP!
Does anyone know the story behind this abomination? Perhaps they had just composed the song and thought it a good idea to film the first attempt to play it?

I have always liked that version. Great loose jam of an unfinished song.
So yeah, the song hadn't been recorded yet at that point and was only developing.

Its far superior to the abomination and farce that were mkIII and mkIV's poor attempts at any mkII song.

Is it not the BBC session version from the "Ritchie Blackmore - Rock Profile, vol. 1"?

What is wrong with it? That was recorded a little time before they all came out to Montreux...
If they could do something like that when it was "not a good day at the office for DP", what were they capable of on a good day???

You're having a laugh, surely? That's crap, IMHO. IG is obviously 'under the influence', and hasn't yet written the lyrics yet, and......well, what's the point. Either I'm too old for this !@#$ or there is some serious 'blind hero worshipping' going on.
I repeat. That is crap. IMHO, of course.
And I should add....if it was unfinished, then they shouldn't have played it live for recording then, should they? Some people will listen to any old crap, wont they?

Not the best version ive ever heard /seen but it is what it is an energetic and loose jam/run through of a yet unfinished song I think its OK ,as far as Gillan goes he was more often than not "under the influence" as you say and actually lost a good part of the great voice he had much much earlier than he should have wlth the drink and fags what a prat!

BTW, that recording is on the LLRO box set along with a version of No No No taped in the same tv show. I like 'em both. Nice loose versions.

You are absolutely right! In your opinion it's crap! In mine it's not!
They played Highway Star long before it was recorded. The same goes for Speed King, but the name of the song was Kneel And Pray. Purple often do this, as do a lot of other bands. Nothing wrong with it as far as I'm concerned. What if they haven't played a song like Long Time Gone before they hit the studio? They might have recorded it and released it, and then we would talk about real crap!
And no, I don't listen to "any old crap". I listen to music that I find spontanious and exciting, and that version of Highway Star have both those elements. It's not their best version, but it's good. Typical Purple at that time. Songs were often developed on stage during jams, and played until it was ready to be recorded.
