Re: HOBL underrated?

I personally never liked the album. And considered it big let down after PS. It just sounds bad. Gillan is struggling, Paice is very loud but sound is very eighies.

The best songs spanish archer and strangeways are more like extended improvisations. I also like bad attitude and dead or alive. Some songs are destroyed by wrong arrangement - unwritten law.
Mitze dupree, black and white, call of the white, hard loving woman are fillers. But the best tracks are not good enought to compensate fillers. Thats why I consider TBRO better album just TBRO, Anya and Solitare compensate for lick it up one mans meat or twist in a tale much better for me than spanish archer and strangeways on Hobl.
For me it is easily the worst MK II album.

Classic, that Whistle Test bit. "This is what we all came for" -> SOTW. Gotta love Blackmore's humour there, too ("so it makes for a nice change").

EDIT: The lady says it all of Deep Purple with Blackmore. The secret is to keep the fans begging for that little bit more. Like a good mistress! emoticon

Overall, Gillan is excellent on this album (but not exactly in that live clip), both vocals and lyrics (no doubt Glover had a hand in there) are among his finest. Brilliant.

Mad Dog is a song I've started to appreciate more and more.

Yeah, Ritchie's bit cracked me up emoticon

Gillan sounded dreadful during Unwritten Law emoticon

I agree w/Mad Dog; it wasn't a song I latched onto at first, but as the years have gone by its definitely become a favorite. The only song I don't really care for is Hard Lovin' Woman and I don't dislike it enough to skip it.

I love the album.
It's probably true that it would benefit from a Glover remix/remaster as the production is very 80's. But the songs are there. It's the album that introduced me to the band and I remember that after PS it wasn't really what everybody expected. But it has a certain "progressive" attitude that is so much "purple".

Hopefully if they do remix/remaster it, they go off the original cd version with the longer song lengths. I bought the remastered one in '99 but kept my [sign in to see URL] I did. I ended up selling the remastered one to a used shop.

Some elements of the 1980s style production have aged very well. Like Lord's fat synth chords in the chorus of Unwritten Law - actually, that track is excellent in every respect.

Gotta put the album on again, now!
