Fingers to the Bone
I have brought this up before, but I'm not sure if it was on these boards.
I can't help but wonder if Fingers to the Bone was written about Ritchie Blackmore. It seems very sincere, and many of the lyrics fit.
I remember people telling me it was about something else and Gillan has publicly said that, but I have my doubts.

Re: Fingers to the Bone
By that time, Gillan had already written a few songs about Blackmore. I saw Purple perform the song in Oslo in 1998, and Gillan said, from the stage, that the song was about hard times, people loosing their jobs even if they "work their fingers to the bone" for the company etc.
I don't think it's about Blackmore. The song isn't aggressive enough, and the lyrics are to "polite".
When Gillan released his (damn fine) album, Toolbox, he said to journalists (when asked) that there were some references to his relationship with TMIB, but "you have to figure them out".
Well, Dirty Dog maybe...?
--- "It can't be hemmoroids! Everybody knows he's a perfect asshole!" Ian Gillan commenting on Blackmore's mystery illness causing show cancelations...a long time ago!

Re: Fingers to the Bone
The thought has crossed my mind also, but the flavour of the song is far too complimentary to be about TMIB.

Re: Fingers to the Bone
To me, "Bad Attitude" is much more Blackmore-aimed.

Re: Fingers to the Bone
Not impossible at all.
I have always seen this song as a sort of blue collar tribute, but on the other hand haven't listened to the lyrics carefully.

Re: Fingers to the Bone
According to both Gillan and Morse separately when interviewed around the time of Abandon's release, the song is indeed about the ordinary hard working guy that works his fingers to the bone for little return, redundancy, etc, and according to Morse was suggested by him.
For Gillan lyrics about TMIB that are at times complimentary, see "Cascades: I'm Not You're Lover"

You hit it on the head as to what "Fingers to the Bone" is about. It's about someone being laid off by a failing company while the owner ran it into the ground. No secret meaning behind it.
Ted the Mechanic also had a direct slap at "Banjo Player".

Re: Fingers to the Bone
I think Fingers to the Bone probably conatins Gillan's finest lyrics.

Great song and good lyrics as well.I always thought it was about an ordinary working man being paid of and discarded by his ungrateful employer never for a second thought it had anything to do with Blackers but who knows

Re: Fingers to the Bone
Given Gillan's complex mind at times, I don't think we can rule it out. However, if it is about the hard working man it is truely a fantastic lyric.
Too many of the lyrics are fitting for the situation with Blackmore for it to be completly dismissed to be honest.
