Exactly. Subpar AOR leftover Rainbow trash.
Yet more Deep Purple than 80-90% of the Morse era material...
I'm with you there, but it's an argument we can't win because some people cannot accept that Purple is still Purple without their beloved Gillan, many of the same people who are willing to accept them without the two most defining elements of their sound, namely Blackmore and Lord.

Well said, Dave. But we can't lose either.
It's just that calling a DP album a Rainbow album makes as much sense as calling a DP album a ZZ Top or a Guns 'n' Roses album (there's a strong Eliminator-era ZZ Top element in Morse line-up(s) albums, as well as a very Guns 'n' Roses style rock strain), let alone a Dixie Dregs album, if past members matter.
For me too Lord and Blackmore, as well as Paice, defined the Purple sound. Yet I have no problem saying any legitimate past or present line-up is 'Deep Purple'. Hell, Rod Evans knew what he was doing and thus called his 1980 line-up 'New Deep Purple' to mark the difference.

Yeah, the Paris show (recorded for TV) and the Knebworth show documents just how powerful Gillan's voice was at the time
NOT!!!
It does, if you listen to it. He's voice is down, yet you can hear how powerful it is in places.
No Rezi, it doesen't! Sorry
No need to apologize for IG!

Purple have had 4 singers, 5 if you count Hughes, yet the only one people refuse to accept as part of purple would appear to be Turner. While I can understand that Gillan is people's favourite, it makes no sense at all to single out Turner as the only one who was not a Purple singer, and his performance on S&M was far superior to Gillans on HOBL. He may well have sucked big time live, although the only evidence I have for that is the Live Between the Eyes dvd, but then again so did Hughes and Coverdale at times, and so did Gillan at times in the 80s and 90s, so I really can't see why he gets singles out.

Congratulations! You’re debating yourself and losing the argument. As I’ve said before, Blackmore should be ashamed of himself for converting Deep Purple to JLT era Rainbow. Slaves & Masters is more offensive than any of the JLT era Rainbow albums because it was released as Deep Purple. Similarly, Gillan and Glover should be ashamed of themselves for hiring Morse and making Deep Purple the pathetic joke that it is today.

Re: Just listened to King of Dreams for the first time
I can't resist posting again the acoustic radio version featured on JLT website (scroll down a few lines). It's a catch.
To me, Slaves & Masters is a good album. It is the ultimate evidence that Deep Purple is much more than mkII or mkIII. It's a sum.

Sorry, I don't see how I was debating with myself, or indeed losing the argument. I was merely putting forward a point of view and backing it up with reasoned argument. You on the other hand are relying on the same tired old arguments that you put forward everytime a debate about non mkII Purple appears on this board. You constantly state opinion as fact, and while I agree that 70s mkII was the ultimate incarnation of Deep Purple, every other incarnation has equal validity whether we like it or not. When all's said and done, as fans we vote with our wallets, and since pretty much every incarnation of the band has had at least some degree of success, then it's us who are giving them their validity, including the Turner incarnation as many people quite clearly bought the album and went to the gigs. Just because some of us don't like something doesn't make it wrong.

...but no one went to see Purple with Turner because of Turner, and no one bought the record because of him. They went to see the legendary band Deep Purple, and it was the band that brought along Turner (much to the fans annoyance I guess). Who in the audience wouldn't have had Gillan up there instead?
But, as I fan you take what you are handed (while thinking it might be the last chance to see them)!

And no one sees the current lineup because of Morse. They go to see the legendary Deep Purple and hear classics from Machine Head. Who in the audience wouldn’t prefer to see Blackmore, Lord and Paice one last time?
