DP 'Mandrake' & 'Truckin' extended workout ?

I was down my local watering hole last night and got into a chat with some of the 'good ol boys' the ageing hippys who were around in the sixtys and now are in their sixtys.

I live in South Wales in UK, its the same area that gave the world Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey, Dave Edmunds, Man and Budgie! (yep .... its that diverse)

Anyway the conversation moves onto DP and i get hit with 'problem with DP is that the're manufactured not organic' .... and then 'and Blackmore nicked most of his ideas off Dave Edmunds, who in turn nicked them off Tom Jones guitarist Mickey Gee, who was doing that stuff in the mid 60's!'

You can well imagine my horror, then it materialises that DP Mk 1 played their last show in our town, and they were crap, DP Mk2 played the small old University venue and were all noise, with the guitar being out of tune throughout the show. Completely spoiled my beer.

Anyway heres a clip of Dave Edmunds playing 'Sabre Dance', it was a hit a number 5 hit for him in the UK in '68, and he was apparently playing it throughout '67, he now says that he was originally taught it by Mickey Gee. Its certainly got that improv section of 'mandrake' & 'truckin' vibe going on ...... thoughts

Well worth checking out the original recording too

there's bits in there but its a bit of a 'so what' to me to be honest if Purple thought theres an idea we could work on - loads of bands do it. This has a cabaret band sound where as Purple had a KABOOM sound! emoticon emoticon

Hard rock/blues has such a limited structure that if you're an old enough git like us you eventually go full circle and start spotting stuff that sounds like something else but 10 years earlier etc.

I always thought Bonzo's opening to Rock'n'Roll was stupendous until I realised he pretty much stole it from the opening to Little Richards "You Keep on knockin' (but you cant come in)" which dates back all the way to 1957. Same with Jimmy Pages infamous 'White Summer' 'steal'.

and so it goes
