The Mk1 Playboy After Dark Appearance on DVD!

Great news, people!

The entire broadcast of Deep Purple Mk1 on Hugh Hefner's Playboy After Dark is now, for the first time, released on DVD. And yes, it is an official release.

I just got a copy of it. I must admit I was nervous opening the package: I didn't find a track listing for the DVD, so I didn't know if it was the complete thing or just Hush and thus ordered it hoping it was the whole thing. I then put the disc into the machine and looked at the chapters: While some other artists had two tracks (artists usually did two numbers in a show), DP only had one: Hush. I was afraid of the worst! But I just hit Hush, and then, fingers crossed, rewinded... and it was all there. Man!

It's thrilling, it's brilliant! The band do a short version of And the Address (check out Rod's dance moves!), then a nervous RB gives Hugh a guitar lesson, and the latter then does a short interview with a notably cool Lordy.

The band then do (the previously released) Hush.

The coolest DP archive clip for a long, long time!

Some product info, got my copy from eBay. I see Amazon, too, has really dropped the price!

Btw: This is not a nudity program, but a talk show of sorts.

Does somebody know if Rod's still out of the picture regarding the financial side of things?
Will it be forever that he 's punished for his act in 1980? emoticon

Yes great! Thanks Rezi.

But, now, the most important: are there naked babes??

I didn't spot any. I don't think that was permitted in American (or any other!) television back then. Lots of gorgeous babes dressed though!

Yup - kinda Hefner's shot at becoming the 'adult' Johnny Carson/"Tonight Show"...if memory serves, it aired for a year or so (maybe 3) then went away.

No need to rely on memory:
Playboy after Dark sessions

Snipped from the info of the boot DVD that's floating around:
This was an hour-long show that ran on network TV (!) from July 1968 to May 1970. The ever hip and debonair Hef surrounded himself with a bunch of attractive young pseudo-sophisticates, salted each week with a variety of personalities ranging from Milton Berle to Mort Sahl, Sid Caesar to Lenny Bruce, Roman Polanski (and Sharon Tate) to Paul Mazursky. There was also some amazing music.

Here's a description of the show by Chris Rywalt (http://www.teevee.org/archive/2000/05/17/)
"The camera moved lazily across a room where a party was going on. A party unlike any party I had ever seen, on film or otherwise. People chatted in small groups. Everyone had a drink in their hand. Blacks and whites mingled freely. Almost everyone was smoking. Quiet jazz filled the room. Everyone was dressed stylishly and with care. Everyone looked attractive in a comfortable way. No one looked like a model -- the guests all just looked like handsome, pleasant people. The light was soft, yellowish, and diffuse.

"The camera wandered past the guests, stopping here and there and catching fragments of their conversation. The camera rolled along very slowly. Amazingly slowly. [snip]

"Later in the show, the camera panned along and encountered a band. They were playing jazz. Gradually, as the camera didn't move, it became apparent that this was a featured band, performing for the show.

"And all of After Dark was like this. Long, languorous camera shots, lingering on details, while an incredibly civilized party went on, with everyone drinking and smoking and grooving to the music. And occasionally one of the guests would turn out to be someone with a talent, who would graciously agree to share some of it with us."
