Awesome Blackmore Dig At Gillan From 1996 Interview.
" As you can see, the singer, Doogie, he can sing a song, and I'm not used to backing someone who can sing. And I haven't played with someone who can sing for probably ten years."
HAHAHAHAHA That's Awesome. It's not just Gillan everybody, Blackmore insults Gillan too. Another quote from a 1999 Blackmore's Night Interview, talking about Highway Star:
"That was very good, from Gillan, the screams and all of that. He could still sing at that point."
So fun to listen to:P:P.

Re: Awesome Blackmore Dig At Gillan From 1996 Interview.
Its a known fact that Gillan was struggling with his voice in the mid 80's, so although it is a dig at Gillan, Blackmore is only answering the question with the truth as he see's it.

Doogie " can sing a song" and still Doogie had to go...
Like every other singer Blackmore ever had,
with one crusial exception. Miss Night...
most probably because she knows how to bend over....

No, that's not an insult. If someone says that someone else cannot sing, this refers to a certain matter - in this case: the ability to sing - and not to him as a person.
If someone says that someone else is an asshole, that refers to him as a person and clearly is an insult.

Re: Awesome Blackmore Dig At Gillan From 1996 Interview.
It's probably not from the same interview - if memory serves, the Blackmore statemment regarding Gilan I'm about to paraphrase was from an interview around the time JLT was in DP - but one reply I always remember was what Blackmore answered when asked the differences/reasons for the departure of Gillan & the recruitment of JLT & how he (Blackmore) was reacting to the change, "Well, this singer isn't drunk all the time" or maybe it was "This snger doesn't drinkl as much"...anyway, it was words to that effect.

Yeah, Ed, I've read that, too: Question was "what is the difference between this band and the previous ones?", and he answered "The singer doesn't drink as much".

Fairly accurate but not quite word for word what he says. He actually says of Highway Star 'Ian Gillan did an excellent job on vocals, screaming, he was in good steed then, he could sing, at that point'

Thing is Blackmore isn't so much on a mission to slag Gillan, more in wind up mode, and references to talking to Bach and stuff. Blackmore has always been a wind up merchant

Re: Awesome Blackmore Dig At Gillan From 1996 Interview.
The quote that I remember from Blackers is "Musically, he doesn't drink as much." I have the issue of 'Guitar Player' stashed somewhere. It was a nice interview.
Since he is stating the facts about Gillan's voice and how he didn't take care of it, it isn't an insult.

Re: Awesome Blackmore Dig At Gillan From 1996 Interview.
DP is a band of drinkers. JLT is well known to enjoy his whiskey.
The article you speak of is Guitar World Feb. 1991....
GW: "How does this edition of Deep Purple differ from past formations?"
RB: "Musically, I would say the singer doesnt drink as much. (laughs)
Coming from a guy who'd warm up for the show with Scotch
One of the shows I caught, Roger had a 16oz. can of Becks, and Gillan a 16oz. Heinekin. I believe Gillan set or dropped his can and a few minutes after, Glover stumbled over and down on it. drinking

Re: Awesome Blackmore Dig At Gillan From 1996 Interview.
Speaking of RB interviews, perhaps the very best one ever is from Long Island, May 1998. That served as the basis for the great Record Collector feature later that year (elementary for any RB fan - excellently written, very well organised chronologically). It was (almost) completely published in MBTP issues 9 and 10 (elementary for any die-hard RB fan).
