Deep Purple (1969) review
I recently listened to DP's third album (self titled from 1969). WOW, what a classic! It has such a great blend of hard rock, blues rock, ballads, and epics. That's something that the early Ian Gillan albums didnt have as much of. Anyways, my favorites are "Chasing Shadows" (awesome Paice drumming!), "The Bird Has Flown" (an absolute classic) and "April" (a perfect epic, with some great singing by Evans). All the other songs are good too, with lots of good solos by Lord and Blackmore. This album ranks up there with "In Rock". I need to get "Book of Taliyesen" (sp?).

I agree 100%. To me, this is the album where the band, especially Blackmore, Lord and Paice found their "Groove".

Yep. 'Deep Purple' is, for me, the best of the Mark 1 albums. It almost makes you wish they had carried on...but then again we would have missed something even greater.

Concerto for Group and Orchestra seemed logical after April, as well as Hallelujah, very MK1.

It is an amazing album. Chasing, Rosemary, Bird, Blind are classics. I love the general feel of the album.

Re: Deep Purple (1969) review
I agree completely. I've always considered the 3rd album to be the first in the line of classic Purple albums. The first two are too heavily cover oriented and stylistically all over the place. They truly had found their stride on the 3rd album and I almost wish they could have done one more with that line-up, just to see where it would have gone. However, I wouldn't have wanted MkII or In Rock not to happen just to see where MkI might have gone. I think it's actually cool that they went out on a high note, unlike other DP line-ups.
