To bad that earlier songs like Bloodsucker, Flight of the Rat, Fireball and NO No No weren't included. Didn't they have triple albums back then?
Yes' Yessongs live album was a triple and was released the same year, but I think triple vinyl releases were pretty rare.

The one time I played it I made it all the way, it was that good. The next time, well, who's to say.

Hmmm..played MiJ for one of my friends, who is a drummer. He thought that the drum solo was a complete Buddy Rich rip-off. He even foresaw some of Paice´s "crowd pleasers" (the fast bass drum a. o.). So maybe the entire album is a rip-off. Go check your old jazz records!!

MIJ might not have been at all if it wasn't for the magnificient drum solo in The Mule!
I'm sure Ian Paice was and is still proud of that solo and it's probably one of the reasons why he pushed for a release of MIJ back then, while some other members of the band were quite reluctant.
It's a very fine drum solo, THE best I've heard so far, from Paice or any other drummer for that matter. In the spirit of Buddy Rich indeed, with an extra oomph and a little less vegas.

Hey, I've often said, "Deep Purple invented Rock Jazz!"

Re: How much better would MiJ have been if ...............
It´s a very good drum solo indeed...used to dig Mick Tucker´s Man with the Golden Arm until I heard this one! The point is that I thought Paice invented that stuff...true, he gave it the rock egde...I used to think that DP invented everything..but Rock Jazz is fine with me!
