So....I guess you'd rename it from WFT

As for "Place In Line", I'd take that "blues" over Zep's led blues anytime. And, it's not that "Our Lady" doesn't know what it is, maybe it's we, who don't know what we are. I love that closing track. It never sounded so good on the gold disc version, it's just too bad Painted Horse wasn't included.
Anyway, the Reappraisal...a GREAT ALBUM!
Place in line always seemed to me to start off poorly (Gillan's all time low vocally on that beginning part) but really turns out Classic at the end.
The only poor song on WDWTWA, imho, is Woman From Tokyo. Always hated that song. Although some of the songs feature In Rock rehashes ("Super Trouper" smells alot like Bloodsucker, etc.) I love the rest of the songs and prefer their hard-rock-Beatles vibe WAY above Machine Head's overt blues fixation. In fact I rate WDWTWA as the best Mark IIa studio album after In Rock.
Hey, I didn't know you guys would start throwing...oh NO! Tomatoes NEVER wash out of my lace underpants!

Gillan sounds very mellow on this album, Episode Six-ish even.

Re: Who Do We Think We Are : A Reappraisal
The only bad match in this lovely album is in the mixing of the bass lines. We have a really heavy and creative Glover with that pacquidermian (neologism?!)Rickenbacker, but you've got to have a reallly keen ear to notice it clearly, and that's a shame.
Jon, here, is the Lord of the Keys (my prrrrrecioussss ), Gillan shouts loud like frying in the Devil's pan, Paice tries to smash fleas down with his sticks and Blackmore is in a "calm storm" playing mood.
Find nothing wrong with it.
The wildest tunes are Smooth Dancer and Super Trouper.
Our Lady sounds like a relutant and sad goodbye. It's atmosphere brings back some colours and moods from the MKI albums. I love it.

Re: Who Do We Think We Are : A Reappraisal
I have to defend the "classic view" that this is the weakest of the 4 Mk 2 LPs. Place in the Line and Our Lady are weak tracks (I find Place in Line totally unlistenable...one of the worst ever trax in ny opinion) and Blackmore really does seem disinterested.
Having said that, being a close 4th on a list behind In Rock, Fireball, and Machine Head doesn't mean it's bad...it's not just not quite as good.
Smooth Dancer and SuperTrouper are kickin songs with 2 of the finest keyboard moments in DP history. WFT is a great fun track. MAry Long is great too..Blackmore's finest moment on the record..lots to like here...but being a Blackmore fan...it's just a little dissapointing.

Have you heard since i've been loving you (III) or Tea for One (Presence). If you have, listen to them again - place in line can't even begin to compare to these masterpieces. To Purple's credit Mistreated is a good blues song.
As for the topic, I do enjoy the WDWTWA album though mary long isn't very interesting (stupid lyrics imo) until the end and the two closing tracks are weak ... the rest of it is great.
Paice drums very well on super trouper and rat bat blue.

Re: Who Do We Think We Are : A Reappraisal
I`ve always considered WDWTWA as a bit of a mixed bag - an album that for me doesn`t really hang together as a whole but has some lovely moments.
WFT is one of my all time favourite tracks with a classic Blackmore riff and a great Gillan vocal. Love the quiet extended middle section and Lord`s bar-room piano.
Rat Bat Blue is also another favourite with some terrific keyboard solos.
I like Our Lady which always seems to have a Beatlesesque quality to me. This song and WFT really highlight Purple`s pop sensibility but this wasn`t a path they chose to follow.
But apart from these 3 songs the rest of the album doesn`t work so well for me. Super Trouper and Smooth Dancer have got the trademark riffs and power but it feels like the band are on auto pilot. Mary Long is ok musically but has a nasty lyric, a cartoon attack on a pair of old buffers who are best ignored. Place in Line is undoubtedly my least favourite Mk2 track ever. It`s a poor man`s Lazy without that tracks aggression or virtuosity. The track goes nowhere and takes one hell of a long time not getting there.
The main problem for me with this album is Blackmore - his lack of enthusiasm is evident throughout and his performances just aren`t up to his usual standard. Frankly he seems bored and jaded and the lack of quality solos suggest he could hardly be bothered to strap on his guitar. I read somewhere that during the WDWTWA writing sessions the band were trying to encourage Ritchie to come up with some riffs and song ideas etc. He would leave the room, return in about ten minutes and begin playing some great riff which the band would start to play along to. Ritchie would then call the music to a halt and say `Nah, I`m saving that for the solo album`. He was a fabulous guitarist but boy, could he be a jerk.
And yet....despite all the criticism above and the fact that it`s my least favourite Mk2 album (better than all reunion stuff, though) I still find myself giving this cd a spin on a fairly regular basis. Mind you, the remastered edition has excellent remixes of all my favourite tracks and also includes the superb Painted Horse which, in my opinion was wrongly excluded from the original release. I believe Ritchie didn`t consider Gillan`s lyrics and melody sufficiently `rock and roll`.

Re: Who Do We Think We Are : A Reappraisal
For years now, I have preferred the album to MH, and sometimes even Fireball.

Me too. This album, In Rock, and Perfet Strangers are the studio album to have as far as Mark II goes.
To be a bit more in depth, I would only reccomend In Rock to anyone looking for a quintessential Deep Purple studio album.
I would most certainly reccomend Live in Paris '75 and Live in Stockholm way before any DP albums besides In Rock however.

Yes I have. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Since I've Been Loving You is a real bore and Tea For One is like pulling teeth. Place In Line is much more enjoyable, with much better lyrics and a nice arrangement.
