Yet he barely played any rhythm guitar parts in the song, even by his usual standards. The soloing was good though.

All the talk of UJR & MS akes me very thankful that we have SM.
Why? Schenker is a bloody brilliant hard rock guitarist to this very day and is perfectly suited to what DP used to be.Hes not at Blackers level but then who is ??
SM is also a brilliant guitarist but completely different and actually quite boring in a hard rock band and not suited to what DP used to be.
It would probably have been short lived with Schenker but it could/would have been exciting.
Personally I wouldn't have wanted UJR in DP, i enjoyed his work in The Scorpions many moons ago but not really a fan of his work outside the band.
I have never like UJR or MS. Leave me cold.

Btw, the Oslo gig wasn’t sold out. I think they sold around 7-7500 tickets out of 9000. Some parts (a couple) of the hall had big, black drapes covering up unsold seats. Half empty hall? Nah, but not sold out.

Both clearly greatly talented, but couldn't get into them.

Slightly offtopic: RB mentions at around the 32:20 mark that TBRO drums are sampled. Never noticed that before, wtf?!

Totally get it mate there are many "greats" that i cant get into either,
eg Satch,Vai,Malmsteen etc all leave me cold as does SM, i hated the dixie dregs and the Steve Morse Band but i do appreciate that all those guys are hugely talented.
Also i really liked The Scorpions with UJR but other than a few tracks here and there I really couldn't take to them when he left ,but im not really a fan of his work outside of the Scorpions.

Doesn't shock me in the least. The drums on TBRO always sounded very artificial in places and very different than what you would expect from Paice. HOUSE OF BLUE LIGHT and SLAVES AND MASTERS also contain definite moments that don't feature Paice. "Hard Lovin' Woman", "The Cut Runs Deep", and most likely "Wicked Ways" aren't entirely Paice's drumming, and may be drum machines completely. And who could forget the atrocious drum machine sound on "Fire,Ice, and Dynamite" from around the same time. They were trying to hard to sound modern and slick on those three albums. It was such a breath of fresh air to hear the Ian Paice of old on PURPENDICULAR and ABANDON.

Re:
Well, I'm aware the band had used sequencers and drum machines prior to TBRO (Unwritten Law, The Cut Runs Deep) but it never occurred to me that drums were sampled all throughout the album. Of course it's still Paice's drumming but the fact that someone might actually prefer artificial drum sounds while having a world-class drummer in the band still blows my mind. Samples also probably explain the total lack of groove in TBRO songs.

All of the guitarists you quote here, I can't get into them either.
